Default Why does nothing grab me like Y the Last Man?

Finished read Y: The last man some time ago but it was often on my mind and I after finishing each tpb I would literally pine after the next volume. Unfortunately ever since then I've found it very hard to find a series that grabs me in such a way (Vertigo or otherwise). I have Volume 1 of Sweet Tooth on the way, but does anyone have any suggestions? I gave ex Machina ago and wasn't sold after the first volume and 100 bullets I can respect it's obvious brilliance but it doesn't feel like a must-read after volume one.

You can try Daytripper. It's a book I would recommend to anyone who loved Y: The Last Man. It's just the one book that collects all 10 issues.

Excellent, thanks! I'll pick it up when I next see it.

Daytripper is a must but what other Vertigo series have you tried? Scalped? Transmetropolitan? Preacher? Sandman? Lucifer? There's some great stuff out there.

I've tried the first volume of Scalped and thought it was alright. I hear it gets a lot better after volume one so I might have to give that another go. I liked Transmetroplitan and Sandman. Preacher is one I always forget! I should pick that up at some point too. Lucifer....I get the feeling I should know what that is but can't place it!

Lucifer is the Mike Carey series that spun out of Sandman: Season of Mists. I loved Preacher but it definitely isn't for everyone. If you like the first trade, carry on to the end. If you don't, none of the later stuff will change your mind. On the other hand, Scalped does get quite a bit better after the first trade.

If you're willing to look outside of Vertigo, I highly recommend Locke and Key, Chew, Strangers in Paradise, Queen and Country and Powers. I love them all but they are fairly different from one another so google them and see if any strike your fancy.

Ah, Lucifer sounds like it's worth a look then. Great shout, thanks. I'm currently waiting on volume 5 of Locke and Key, probably my favourite series at the moment and I need to pick up the omnivore vol2 of Chew. How is Powers? I've picked up volume one countless times but can't quite convince myself to buy it (partly because it's paperback and they only have the nice hardback collections starting with the second volume).

"100 Bullets" takes two trades to really get going. It's all but impossible to tell what the book is going to be about from just the first trade.

'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

I might see if I can borrow the next two trades then and see how I get on. I was hoping I had missed something considering the hype surrounding the series so I'll give it a look, thanks.

I always found Fables to a must read.

Two trades in and I found myself liking the concept but not so much the execution but this might be another case of it needing another trade to really get going. Might be another to add to the borrow list!

I have the same problem...nothing gets me like Planetary. So I guess I might as well recommend that here!

Read it already and own it already (though would kill for the absolutes), but an excellent shout for anyone who hasn't. I love how easy it is to dip back in to those books at any point and enjoy a favourite issue. There are so few books I can say that about.

It was actually vol 4 of Fables "March Of The Wooden Soldiers" that sold me on it. It blew me away.

    I'd recommend the Unwritten.
