I think you'll find that none of those wars were consistent with the teachings of Christ, and if you disagree, you are free to bring me a New Testament quote that is supportive of the Crusades, the expulsion of Jews--it would be odd if a Jew was to promote the expulsion of Jews... and Jesus did beg God that he forgive the Jews... could that have been a misinterpretation used by the clergy to put forward their own corrupt ends? I'll answer my own question: yes. Religion has been misused since the day of its creation--nobody is going to argue this. The real question is: is Islam being misused by terrorists? The answer: no, it isn't. It fully supports any action that involves killing infidels. That's a fact that is abundantly supported by dozens of direct quotes from the Koran without the merest hint of ambiguity.

Worse still, the Koran is becoming more and more popular as a direct source of religious teaching, the teachers are emphasizing the violent passages more and more, and this is why Islamic terrorism is rising so rapidly.

Those things were approved by the religious experts of the day including _Popes and even Martin Luther.

Kind of a big deal? I mean it ultimately means nothing to me, or anyone else that doesn't believe in God or Heaven, but I was not expecting that.

Police firing tear gas and permitting thugs to attack Copts after a funeral.

On its own, that's not proof that the government is persecuting Copts - more proof the government isn't doing a good job at protecting the Copts and reforming the police to not be the violent, authoritarian thugs they were hired to be. (And as Ian says, the riot police have ignored attacks on Muslim Brotherhood offices. They've also battered people who aren't Copts)

This will shock you, languald, but the Koran is actually very inconsistent on the subject of Christians and Jews. This happened because Mohammed was initially friendly towards the other tribes of the Middle-East, until they resisted his efforts to be recognised as a prophet.

If you're talking about the Jewish tribes in Medina, one allied themselves with Mecca and took part in military action against Mohammed.

Jesus Christ abrogates many of the teachings of the Old Testament, so I can't reasonably accept that the Old Testament is relevant to the beliefs of Christians.

The Christians believe it! That's why it's part of the Bible, their religious figures quote from it, they make a big deal about the Ten Commandments, there are millions in America who will not believin evolution or the age of the Earth because it contradicts Genesis, Leviticus is the go-to book for Christians wanting to condemn homosexuality....

You can't logically say the Old Testament is irrelevant.

EDIT: The Old Testament is also very relevant to Jews, so if you accept it's got verses saying "go kill people" then you have to say Judaism is an inherently violent, anti-democracy religion too.
