Activision shuts down Radical Entertainment

Activision is shutting down Radical Entertainment, the studio behind the Prototype franchise & The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Activision cited the reason of the closure on sales of Prototype 2; saying:

Although we made a substantial investment in the Prototype IP, it did not find a broad commercial audience. Radical is a very talented team of developers, however, we have explored various options for the studio, including a potential sale of the business, and have made a difficult conclusion through the consultation process that the only remaining option is a significant reduction in staff. As such, some employees will remain working for Radical Entertainment supporting other existing Activision Publishing projects, but the studio will cease development of its own games going forward.

Wonder way they never put them on any Spider-Man game? Seems like a no brain to put them on a Spider-Man/Venom game, or any of the other Marvel things Activision has the rights to that they seem to be pissing away.

I have no idea how it did overall. This says it was the highest selling game of April, but that nothing really sold that well that April too.

Still, I don't really get it. Activision has the guys who made Prototype, they've got the Spider-Man license, everyone that sees the game seems to make some kind of comment about it looking like a Venom game. Maybe instead of Prototype 2 they have the team make a Venom game?

Blizzard makes good games that sell better than every other pc game.

Starcraft 2 was the best RTS to come out since WC3, which they also made.
WoW is the most successful mmorpg by such a wide margin that you can't even compare it to other games, other games which rip it off wholesale.
Diablo 3 is diablo 2 with some changes...but Diablo 2 was really good.
Whatever you think of the actual quality of the games is one thing, but saying their games are horrible whilst they are so much more popular than other games for such a long time isn't being totaly honest. And yes, i know you didn't say that, but it's what i originaly responded too.

It's got a 74 on Metacritic. That supersedes sales numbers, unless those numbers are outrageous.

Aside from that, it's becoming almost a regular practice for game studios to lay off most of their workforce between production cycles, especially if the parent company is looking to save money. Penny-Arcade Report just did a pretty good article on it.

This. A lot of their games are being copied by the majority of the same genre. My only problem with Blizzard is some of their stories are copied... WarCraft 3 is a ripoff of DragonLance: Dragon of Summer Flames novel. Also, orcs are from WarHammer type of orcs. But then again, everyone copies these days. Its just that Blizzard knows how to make quality games with great support.

Warcraft was basicly an admitted copy of Warhammer, because they originaly were making a warhammer game.
Of course, it certainly split off in a different direction.

Why are Activision acting big gangsta corporation style? One fail and it's a bullet to the heart? Radical must be the only one from studios owned by Activision I get their games that are not based on comic book franchise
