Technically, it has only been 20 years for this particular story, but I've wanted to create my own comic book going all the way back to the early 80s when I'd watch Spider-man and his Amazing Friends every Saturday.
The premise of the book is "realistic superhero" combined with elements of crime noir. The title character of NUMB is Jarrett Rourke, otherwise known as "JR." He is the son of a Boston-area Irish crime boss and was born with a genetic defect that essentially shuts down his nerves.
Basically, JR cannot feel pain. He cannot really feel any physical sensation. This inability to feel any physical sensation makes him an extremely dangerous fighter, nearly fearless. He can physically train at levels that normal men cannot, allowing him to achieve levels of conditioning that rival any Olympic athlete. He does, however, feel emotional pain, and this fact is exacerbated by the relative numbness he feels in every other regard. He can taste food, but can’t distinguish temperature. He is extremely strong, but his body doesn't know when he needs to sweat, which can be lethal to him. He can be clumsy because he can't "feel" the way normal people do when he moves around. He is aroused by women, but he can’t physically feel it if they touch him. There is a great deal of contrasting material to cover and I hope to touch on every nuance.
His childhood in the crime family will be explored, detailing his father’s greed in having a human weapon at his disposal, and Jordan’s emotional sensitivity and sympathetic/empathetic conscience clashing against his father’s wishes.
Here are some pictures. I put a great deal of work into this and I hope people enjoy reading it. Despite it being my first-ever attempt at creating a book, I am very proud of it, so be gentle :)
Here is an early drawing with art direction:
