You know...what if this is actually Spider-Man's last year?
...then again, what would happen to Avenging Spider-Man?

Hmmm interesting I guessI'm probably completely wrong about this BUT I'm gonna guess somehow or another the big thing for #700 is that this kid is gonna be horribly injured or even worse killed because he's Spidey's sidekick, the public finds out he's only a kid & Spidey becomes public enemy #1 & for the most part & becomes ostracized from the rest of the hero community like he never has been before.
Wow, Spider-man with a side kick YES!!!! Sign me up now!!!

I guess Spider-Girl's sales were too low for her to be considered.
So it seems that spiderman is going to become a father type figure (or an Uncle Ben type without the death), that seems to be an odd decision for what they want Spider-man to be (a "youthful" character). Since this kid will be what they want SM to be, though it does make sense to use this kid replace him.

Wait, am I getting this right, this guy does not have spider powers? Also he's more powerful than Peter. Wonder what his powers are.
Edit: Also this is the announcement of a major change to the status quo of a popular comic book character, shouldn't everyone be freaking out by now?

I very seriously doubt they'll replace Peter & if they do it's probably not gonna be for any great length of time...I mean sure this kid isn't in the same position Ben Reilly was but he doesn't have the history (real longterm publication history) that some of Marvel's greater "this guy replaces the Hero" stories that Marvel has had success with such as Bucky replacing Steve, Rhodey replacing Stark or even when DC had Dick Grayson replace Bruce Wayne.
I'd see very little reason why readers would want to care about some kid who'd be replacing Spidey who was only introduced a handful of issues ago.
Peter is taking alot of young heroes under his wing these days. First Miles, then Hope, now Andy.
It worked with Miles(to be honest the set-up would actually be a little better in this case). Though yes, you actually have to build a following with new characters. There are also plenty of characters with long histories that aren't successful (Black Panther and Doctor Strange), and hell those replacement characters you named ultimately went back to their previous SQ's. I would actually be impressed if Marvel actually went with such a risky idea (I do agree it would be risky).

Wow, just when I thought there wasn't another gimmick for them to use on the current Spider-Man comics, they go and give him a sidekick. I'm sorry, but I'm all gimmicked out at this point.
"Seriously, where's the Hobgoblin when you need him?"--Peter Parker, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #36
"I'm being ignored more than Roderick Kingsley"--Me.
"Dorkiest joke ever. Use it at parties."--Steve Wacker (AKA J Jonah Wacker).
So I guess if Peter is now old enough to have a kid sidekick, why was his marriage retconned again? But hey, since he's got a sidekick now, I guess he needs a subterranean cave with poles to slide down on. After all, this pretty much is admission that "Big Time" has been in the process of turning Spider-Man into a carbon-copy of Batman, so why not go all the way?
Oh brother. As if this didn't sound like an even MORE desperate move on Marvel's part than it already was.
Plus, if Alpha here is going to be a recurring character, I suppose we'll be getting yet ANOTHER Spidey comic to compete with Batman and Robin. Unless this new kid really is going to be the new Spider-Man after issue #700.
