Default Gillen Journeys Into the Mystery of the "Manchester Gods"

"Loki" is the only hope for the war ravaged realm of Otherworld in "Journey Into Mystery's" latest "Manchester Gods" arc. CBR spoke with writer Kieron Gillen about his plans for the title.

Gillen is quickly becoming my favourite writer at Marvel.

Between his clever deconstruction of previous Brit comic writers here in Journey into Mystery and his truly brilliant use of Mr Sinister in Uncanny X-Men, I cannot wait to see what he has for us moving forward, and what Marvel has for him come the creative shake up!

I have been really enjoying this arc. I have never bought this comic before but I couldn't resist Captain Britain and Otherworld.

It certainly has been a fun read, Gillen is as amazing as ever.

Gillen is amazing and on a whole different level than most Marvel writers. Moore, Morrison, Ellis and now Gillen. Plus LOL at naming the Arch-Druid after Tony Wilson

I like the cross-culture references, such as D&D (which actually has an urban druid class; and as an aside, I think Hela is more of lawful neutral with leanings toward evil, like the deity Wee Jas) and Tolkien. The magic-vs-science conflict also hearkens to the Flight of Dragons story for me.

Next to X-Factor this is absolutely the best book being published today.

Yep, goodbye Leah...Hello fridge stuffed with what remains of her.

I can't wait to see just what Hela does to get back at Loki.

Indeed, I'd imagine we'll be seeing the end of her as one of those tragic scenes that Gillen mentions. Man that's going to be depressing, even if she really does just generally seem very angry with Loki. There's just no way things will end well for him in any way I'd imagine. Good or evil, Loki always loses.

I don't even see what she'd really get out of revenge on him. He's been far more use to her and Hel by not acting too antagonistic to him.

This is the series Demon Knights wishes it were.

That being said, it would be nice to see Loki with some ideological allies. I'm wondering just how this will end. Something tells me the Manchester Gods are going to get whacked at the end of this thing.

Whereas this series, I think, wishes it were as consistently insightful as Wonder Woman. All turns round and round and roounnnd.

I don't see how the Manchester Gods can be 'whacked'. They represent progress, industrialization. Unless you have digital dieties entering the fray, I don't see how that is going to get squashed.

They represent the worst aspect of industrialization (the enslavement of the workforce)

Loki just told all the Otherworld gods the weak points of the Manchester gods. I'm pretty sure they could take them out if they decide it's necessary.

Wonder Woman is indeed an amazing series, but it's fairly different from JiM. Demon Knights is more of the dubious "heroes" on adventures. Wonder Woman's more Buffy than Angel, if you know what I mean.

I don't think they represent the worst aspects of industrialization -- I think they represent industrialization, warts and all.

Wilson's speech certainly is quite smart and quite compelling, makes its case quite nicely, and unless he's lying I'd have to say that Manchester's solution is the right one -- peaceful co-existence rather than fear of progress.

Indeed, unless he's lying, his terms seem rather acceptable. Of course, it would mean the rest losing any real power and one could make some sort of argument that something is lost in completely accepting the Manchester Gods.

The next solicit does seem to indicate that Loki comes up with something, but not exactly terms that either likes. The fact that one of the Manchester Gods appears to be on the Vanir's side if those legs are any clue.

Wouldn't the same be true of the Manchester Gods? Otherworld's weak points are even MORE well known than Manchester's. That seems mutually assured destruction. I'm suspecting a cold war for just that reason.

I'd say that JiM is somewhere between them, I suppose. Demon Knights is as similar to JiM as it is to Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers in regards to tone, though as I think on it Demon Knights and JiM certainly have that 'you never know whats true, double crossing at every turn' feel to them. I'm enjoying both of them immensely; JiM is having higher highs but lower lows (I very nearly dropped the book entirely as a result of Exiled).
