Default Recommend Spider-Man Stories For Straczynski Fan

Got back into collecting recently after not having been in the hobby since I a kid back in 1996. Picked up the Straczynski run of ASM vol.2 starting at issue #30 today and I'm really enjoying it. I have a bad feeling I'm going to be measuring all the future ASM issues against these and I don't know if they will measure up. I hope they will.

The only other Spider-man I've read since starting up the collection again was the Mcfarlane Spider-man Series. Torment wasn't great but I enjoyed the 10 or so issues that followed Torment fairly well.

Any other gems I should be looking forward to?

People are going to recommend whole runs for you but I'll say this: Please read the Gauntlet, Grim Hunt and Fear Itself Spider-Man. If you're going in order it'll take a while but definitely read these. It was the last bastion of really amazing Spider-Man before Slott.

Kraven's Last Hunt is pretty damn good, and some hallucinations take a slightly different meaning after the totem saga.

I would recommend JMS's entire run. It was brilliant. It had low points, of course, just like any run. But taken in total, it was just greatness. I didn't care for 'The Other' so much, but that was mainly because it was too long. It did have some good parts to it.

I'm not sure if Until the Stars turn Cold is in that Volume but i suggest that by JMS, it got me into buying comics in general.

Incidentally, if you're a fan of JMS's Spider-Man, I'd recommend some of his other comics work.

Midnight Nation is an excellent horror story.
His Brave and the Bold is an anthology of DC team-ups that have often been quite clever.
Supreme Power is an exceptional mature readers take on how superheroes would affect the world, focusing on many DC tropes.

I think Brand New Day was a good read, and it does kick off the era. And this is coming from someone who hates OMD and the Devil annullment.

Read all of JMS' run. I thought it was good right up until Spider-Man joined the New Avengers.

If you enjoyed McFarlane than I would go back and read all his stuff on Amazing too. It is all the early 300s. People think the writer, Michelinie, wasn't that great, but I think his stuff around this time period was pretty good.
