Is that Surfer page recolored? Because apart from the way the different kinds of paper treat color, they look exactly the same.

I actually don't think the newer one looks better. It kind of hurts my eyes. And the Surfer himself, with no color added at all, looks unfinished. They should have at least embellished him a little with some light blue.

    Thats the recolour.

And they couldn't embellish him with some light blue because light blue wasn't in the original.

They're scientists, Allan. They know what they're doing.

As I said above; however, they are actually compensating with this difference in paper. I buy the paperback Masterworks and have noticed a considerable improvement in the look of the art since the choice was made to switch from glossy to matte stock. Its not newsprint, but its very close, and a lot warmer looking than the previous incarnations of either MMW or Omnibuses.

I owned the FF Omnibus vol.2, all the originals and all the Masterworks in trade paperback form for the same material.

Rating the colour treatment on all three, the originals win, but the Masterworks tpb volumes are a very close second. I sold the Ominbus, as I was not a fan of colour job.

If you can't afford original silver age comics, and want your stories in colour, I highly recommend the affordable and high quality paperback Masterworks.

I actually got the first FF MMW TPB (what a mouthful) in the mail yesterday and was surprised by the paper quality. Really nice matte and slightly off-white finish.

I thought the Marvel Masterworks were an attempt to preserve the comic book to it's original look as possible.

It actually looks like there is, but I suppose that's just bleed-through.

Still, it looks better that way.

Looks like Annihilus, at least in the older one. The second one looks like a family portrait of three people.

Now, as to why a picture of Annihilus is hanging on the Richards' wall ...

One of the walls not depicted on the page must feature a mural of Dr. Doom.
I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."
Basically, if you miss the wonder of a dog flying around in a little Superman cape, you're in the wrong hobby.

Maybe it's actually a souvenir from the Neg Zone: "My super-team went to the Negative Zone, and all they brought me was this lousy poster."

Now that I think, of it, didn't the Fantastic Three go there when Sue was preggers?

The first one has brighter colors thaty contrast each other more strongly, giving the peice a lively energetic look. The second uses cooler more subdued colors that blend together more, making the thing feel rather dull.

I don't like the colors in either one. The first one is garish and ugly and Sue looks like she has some form of jaundice, while she fades into the background of the second one (appropriate for the Invisible Girl, true, but probably not what Kirby and Stone had in mind) and the gradations don't match the forms they're meant to add depth to. I think the switch to subtler background colors was a good decision, just badly executed. But I wasn't terribly adept in dealing with color in art school so it might be wise to take my opinion with a grain o' sodium chloride.

This follows pretty closely my thinking. I'm not down with either, but overall, I'll take the second one. I keep hearing people say that the original is "warm." If brothel red and jaundice yellow are warm, I'll take cool any day.

Yes, I think they were after the cosmic control rod to fix Sue's pregnancy somehow. And there was a What If the Invisible Girl had Died? issue about if they had failed to get it which was one of the most depressing comics I've read.
