Advice for Making A Comic

Hey guys. One thing I've always wanted to do, was to make a comic. Not get published or anything special. I just want to make something from my own efforts. I have a start on a story (which is feeling more like a book now) and I've already accepted my art for this is going to be... less than professional grade stuff. I already have all my supplies (can borrow a drawing tablet and use paint.net) but have not yet started with any character design or anything of that nature. So, what advice would you give someone just starting out? What do you wish you knew before you ventured into the great art of comics? I appreciate any and all help.
