Scott Mendelson wrote a pretty good article on the Tomb Raider controversy: http://scottalanmendelson.blogspot.c...tomb.html#more

    The best part:

Or better yet, they could have decided to either not create an 'origin' for Lara Croft at all. She's an archaeologist, she can survive in any environment, she knows how to kick ass and handle firearms, the end.
I love the sentiment here. Less story makes for a better action game.

    That makes no sense whatsoever.

The word action indicates you are doing things involving action, putting too much story into action gets you a metal gear game, which are horrible action games (though i like them) because you spend most of your time watching the story.

I don't think MGS was ever meant to be a straight up action game.

True, but even then, utilizing cutscenes that go even past ten minutes, never mind some of the MGS cutscenes, is just not a good look.

I mean, what video games have over any other medium in terms of immersion is being able to play as the protagonist while following them. Taking that away from the audience for that long just goes against the point.

True. The main thing that pissed me off about Kingdom Hearts 2 was the fact that the game was being interrupted every 3 minutes for another cutscene.

But games like KH and MGS are extreme examples. "Story" and "long ass cutscenes" don't have to mean the same thing.

Right, but it is an action game with more story.
He did say less story, not no story.

even Max Payne 3, which is as actiony as action games get, has cutscenes a bit too long...but I didnt mind because its a solid game

now on this whole Tomb Raider issue, while I am a bit uneasy of something like that being presented in a video game, I also remember games like Manhunt that have you killing people with a plastic bag...so its really all about context

I keep getting this thought in the back of my head that i have played a game with rape in it before, or at least implied rape, but i can't remember what it was.
    ...
When i was a kid, i played double dragon in the arcade, and the game opens with some guys punching your girlfriend in the stomach and carrying her away.

You're right. What a crazy thought!

Seriously, though, if you're not into Contra, Earth Defense Force, Castlevania, or Metal Slug, don't even talk to me.
