I don't care for the Marvel redesign but the DC one is kinda nice. I might need to snag it if it's the Carmine Infantino stuff.

These are just fan mock ups, not real redesigns as far as I'm aware. I saw these on Kurt Busiek's facebook page and I have to disagree with Kurt when he suggests that these Essentials covers are better than the existing ones that Marvel are putting out. I mean, I kinda like what they're going for with the sleek, benday-dot coloured redesign, but ultimately I think they look a bit cheap.

Both approaches look very classy. The DC one in particular would make the book appear more expensive than it actually is!

I think that would be a great look for the Essentials.

The archive ones look great too, but it would never happen as the fans would engage OCD mode and freakout about the spines.

I think both look great ... but Cromag & Hermit are spot-on about the OCD collectors.

I don't know about that--on my edition of Essential Spider-Man Vol 1, the spine is printed backwards (that is, it reads right-side up when the book lies on it's cover, not the back. Or bottom-to-top when ion a shelf. But then, DC has always seemed to be much better than Marvel in terms of book design, even for deluxe edition comics)

    What's wrong with the spine?

It's different from the ones that already exist. That's enough to make the OCD types' heads explode.

I like the Essential a lot. The Archive one is a bit busy for my tastes.

They've already changed the Essential trade-dress once.

Being the non-OCD type...I'd be a trembling mass of indifference.

Only over the Archives one. Anyone finicky enough about this stuff to care about the spines not matching wouldn't be buying Essentials anyway. They'd go for the Masterworks or something else expensive and colored.

I'd like to see what someone could come up with for a redesign for the Showcase Presents DC books. Not that I particularly dislike the current designs.

Fans of the Archives and Masterworks are incredibly picky about spine uniformity. Late last year it was announced the Marvel logo on the Masterworks would be slightly altered and there was a massive uproar with several people claiming to stop buying the books over it, simply because it would "mess up" the look of their shelves.

Not sure, but I think medication might be available for that sort of thing.

If not, a few good dope slaps might help.
