I've been fortunate to have parents that got me to start saving early in life. And as I work in comics, as hectic as freelancing can be, it's a comfort to have that foundation. Because things can change overnight.

It's so sad hearing what happened to Robert (both his financial troubles as well as a real early death). But it's also endearing and uplifting to know that the HERO Initiative was there for him (and many others).

I've worked on covers for a few of their fundraising efforts. And you just never know exactly to who specifically that money might go to. Hopefully it continues to help those creators of yesteryear that need the assistance.

May Robert Washington rest in peace. May he inspire each other to treat each other more compassionately.

Also, if you can give to the Hero Initiative, or make a difference in your own community, please do so. There is a lot of need, but as Robert Washington's comic from the anthology said who can be there for people like him depends who is there for good organizations like the Hero Initiative.

Sad way to end. Whenever I see people online talk about the state of the industry as based on things like the Avengers movie doing well I remember that it doesn't really reflect reality for the cretaors.

I tried to start a write-in and twitter campaign to get him on the book when Rozum left... didn't take off.

This is so sad. He was posting here just a few months ago.

Man, this is literally less than week after I donated to match my ticket price for The Avengers. News like this makes it harder and harder to want to read comics from the Big 2.

Hi, all, thanks to the efforts of many generous fans and friends -- and loads of support from the Hero Initiative -- Robert Washington's remains will now get a proper burial. If you would like to attend his memorial service, it is planned for 7pm Monday, June 25th at the Ross-Roden Funeral Home, 725 E. Gun Hill Road, Bronx, New York 10467.
