Realism, he gave his suit and shield back to SHIELD and now he needs to improvise.
He will probably only wear it temporally.

He's going to war with an army of genocidal machines. You can't pull any punches with those things. Yeah when he was a one man strike force, the old jumpsuit worked well as it let him be fast and agile. In a warzone vs machines of that tech level, armour is just a sensible option! Because unarmored, eventually he will be hit, and then: death. Wearing armour at least helps protect some of his more vulnerable squishy bits from the laser fire/ solid steel fists.

He's not fighting a super-villain 1 on 1 anymore, he's fighting an entire army.

Hehe, thanks =) I might in the future, I already have some Cyclops, Wolverine and Spidey concepts on my deviantart page though. I was trying to go for a realistic vibe without taking away the personality of the costumes. For instance with mjolnir I gave it an extendable handle, since he doesn't use his other hand for a shield it made more sense to put all his weight behind each swing. (Plus size changing is part of the mythology iirc).

Back on topic, I think it's good the new cap uniform is so unique. It differentiates 616 and Ultimate more. Thor's is iconic, Iron Man's was (now it's derivative...) so Cap should have one too (ok his WWII one was unique, but he never wore that present day).
