#13 has a lot of backstory so I would get it. however some previous issues involve Nimrod sentinals which will probably be a factor in Divided We Fall.

Cool, thanks again. I wanted to start this series with #1, but never got around to it. Will definitely start from here, now, though. It seems like there's a lot of acclaim regarding #13.

Well in my opinion it was the best because it has a direction now which I felt the previous issues didn't. But the previous issues will get you prepared for DWF.

For a better understanding of what's going on you could pickup Ultimate X (Loeb's best work in the UU).

I had thought so, that line about "intellectually" sounded like something Johnny would say. But the dark hair threw me, haha.

What has been repeatedly mentioned in the current storyline are the events of Ultimatum, so I would take Ultimatum as the starting point for starting from scratch. Loeb has in his return to Marvel acted in the capacity of being a company man; therefore, I see Ultimatum as fulfilling a directive to take the Ultimates universe firmly in a new direction away from 616. The old had to be cleared away such as Cyclops so that in this Ultimates / X-Men universe Kitty Pryde can finally come into her own as a leader, a role that she has always been teased to have in various alternate futures / realities but could never achieve in 616.

They didn't replace the variant, they replaced main cover. Variant is still the same it was supposed to be from the beginning.
