Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow.
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow.
The first comic that comes to mind, and I traded them immediately, was Spawn. I bought the first 8 or 10 issues after reading a pretty good review in CBG. Man what a difference of opinion ! McFarlane is super-overrated and I could care less about Spawn.
The most recent comic I really looked forward to and was crushed was John Byrne's Doom Patrol That should've been great in every way. The absolute worst was his horrible dialogue, and I'm a big Byrne fan. That pretty much killed any more Byrne for me, esp since his stuff is less and less creative and looks to be him calling it in.
hondobrode, uhoh, I bought Spawn 1-3, having heard TM interviewed generally years ago. Can over 200 issues be wrong? Haven't read any yet.
I never liked the classic Doom Patrol. Or any version of the Doom Patrol. I bought and read the first Showcase Presents book. They were just such downbeat, whiny, depressing characters that it was hard to like any of them.
The '70s Spider-Woman. Bought the Essential volume to see what Bendis loved so much about the character. I came out more confused than I went in. She had two origins that followed each other in rapid succession. Then the book just kind of meandered without purpose from there.
Not too crazy about New Teen Titans either. I mean, it was okay, but I didn't think it was as great as its reputation suggests. I was expecting something more.

Scott Pilgrim
Man, what utter crap this series was. I know its critically acclaimed but its just terrible. Scott and Ramona are unlikeable characters; straight out users and leechers with no redeeming qualities to them. Also I think Scott was mildly 'tarded or something. I don't think I've seen a character that's been that stupid (aside from G'Nort). I know I'm older than the intended audience, but I'm not a gamer (even though I'm alright with the video game references), but I felt insulted that someone wrote this for a mass audience.

I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."
Basically, if you miss the wonder of a dog flying around in a little Superman cape, you're in the wrong hobby.

I found the recent Batman Odyssey particularly horrible. I felt compelled to choke it down because it was Neal Adams drawing Batman, but I wish he hadn't written it. Definitely the worst series I have read in the last ten years. It made me less of a Neal Adams fan, which is a damn shame.
Life looks better in black and white.
Yeah. O'Malley isn't much of an artist, so the books don't even have that going for it. (As opposed to, say, Ross Campbell's Wet Moon. The portion of the first volume that I was able to make myself read established that the characters were all repellent, stupid & in dire need to a good immolation, but at least Ross Campbell is a sublime artist.)

Tom Grindberg drawing Warlock and the Infinity Watch. Starlin characters just ruined artistically. During that time I didnt think anything could make me drop a comic with those characters but that did it.
The last issue of First' Dreadstar. It had taken me years to get and I loved the issues leading up to it and then.....Star TRek parody?? Ugh
More recently is Final Crisis. Loved the art, but hated the story.
WHAT?!?!? My Captain Marvel spotlight (issue 2) was soooo dogeared and wrinkled from reading it so many times. Pat Broderick artwork was so beautiful that I sought out so much of his past work over the years. His Micronauts work is way under appreciated. Some of his best work owes some of the intensity to inker, Danny Bulanadi. I found Danny' work heavy handed but I felt it worked great with Broderick' work. Have not read the issues in some years so maybe the storytelling doesn't hold up over time.
Cry for JUSTICE!! springs immediately to mind, as do the first 4 issues of Robinsons Starman...I'm sure there are others I've managed to block out.
90s Image/X- books...most romance comics from the 50s-70s...
Why do you judge these books by their covers?
Which are those?

Pull List; seems to be too long to fit in my sig...
I hate the Death of Gwen Stacy. She should never have been killed.
Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker, Professor X, Mar-Vell, Richard Rider- Bring Them Back!!!
Re Grant Morrison's mainstream work: I'm thinking of his DC stuff, especially anything about Batman and Superman, in which I find those characters to be exalted to ridiculous heights, to the detriment of other story elements.
Agree about Scott Pilgrim - not that I know enough about it to hate it, but never saw the appeal.
