    Default Powers

As I have said in other threads, I am kind of new to pulling and reading comics on a regular basis and I recently picked up Powers Vol. 1. I started reading it, but I found the dialogue to be off-putting. It seems like Walker has a bad tendency to repeat whatever was just said to him. Is this a series worth continuing with? I like Bendis's Marvel stuff, but it feels like his writing has become more refined over the last couple of years. What are your thoughts on Powers? Should I stay or should I go?

I jumped on the series around #12 of the first series, and I'm still buying it. It is different from his Marvel series, as he is not bound by all the restrictions that comes with large companies like Marvel and DC. I'd say that you should try the second trade as well, before making up your mind.

I may finish Vol 1 and then try Vol 2. I may as well give it a bit more a chance.

I've read the whole series (and own them in singles) and love it. The only problem the comic really has is the constant delays, even when the creators supposedly have issues finished and ready to go.

I have finished the first three TPB volumes and I am enjoying it. However, sometimes if feels like I am missing something. At the end of the Olympia Arc, Deena gets a phone call at the police station and then flips on the TV for a "Special Report" says "This bad...real bad" the issue ends and it has yet to refer to that. Am I missing something there?

I still am not a huge fan of the way the dialogue is written, but I really like the mystery aspect of the series. I am going to keep on reading them until I am caught up.

If memory serves me correctly it gets brought up soon. I don't believe you are missing something.

You don't like the dialogue? What bothers you about it? Many consider it the strength of the book and of Bendis' writing style.

I've thought for a while that the dialogue feels organic, as if it's how people would actually talk, but it might not always translate well to a comic, or to how people are used to comic characters speaking.

    I personally like it.

I don't care for all of the stammering. I realize that people often talk that way, but it just kind of irritates me. Not enough to quit reading though. Also, early in the comic Walker had a tendency to repeat everything that was just said to him and that was annoying, too. However, that doesn't seem to happen as much anymore.

I am now reading volume 7 and I am still quite enjoying it. I was a little confused at first when the two apes were fighting, but I realized that the apes evolved and have become lifelong enemies. It seems that there is quite a bit of backstory on Walker and some of the powers and I am really digging this story arc.

UPDATE: I am starting to come around to Bendis' writing, though he seems to have cut back on the constant stammering of the earlier books. I like that there is more backstory now and, like I said before, I like the mystery aspect of the series.

Does anyone know if Powers is still being published on any kind of regular basis? I am on Vol. 8 and I have through vol. 13 (haven't read past 8 yet, though) and would like to read whatever comes after 13.

While the question of it being "regularly published" is relative, it is still being published. The 14th book should be out in October. Bendis, it seems, puts out a single issue every so often, since he's busy with his millions of other Marvel projects. With the announcement that the Powers TV series isn't quite dead, I'm hoping if it airs we'll see issues crop up more often.

I gave up on Powers during the last of the big delays. As much as I know he says he loves it, I don't think Bendis really respects this book anymore.

I will probably get vol 14 when it comes out, but I think I will wait until the trades to read Powers beyond that. I don't what to read one and then have to wait six months for the next issue.
