Default Musical gems hidden in awesome albums

I love the Who. And on any given day if you ask me which one album of theirs is my favorite, I'll likely answer Who's Next.

It was my first real exposure to their music and as such remains my faave album. And what's not to like? So many of their classic tunes came off of this one!

Still, lost in everyone's love of Baba O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes, Won't Get Fooled Again, and Bargain is a gem of a song I never get tired of hearing.

I present to you Love Ain't For Keeping:

Not surprisingly, I was first exposed to another great in the same year. My uncles also played Alice Cooper's Killer album for me at this time. And it also is my fave album by Alice Cooper, as a band, not a single person's name. ;)

So, again you have hit after hit from this album, yet my favorite tune was never really a huge hit. Got 8+ minutes? If so, listen to Halo Of Flies below. You'll see why I chuckle when people tell me Alice Cooper's best music was in the 80s. :)

    Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful

Nashville Cats, Rain on the Roof and Summer in the City are probably the famous ones, but Coconut Grove is a great song.

If you listen to this album:

...don't neglect its acoustic closing track, "I'll Be Back."

Buried Alien (The Fastest Post Alive!)
The responses are as predictable as they are sad.

This is one of their all-time best songs EVER!

I routinely find myself singing this song.

Yes...it's kind of a shame that it's buried at the end of an album rather than released as a single. "I'll Be Back" *never* makes greatest hits compilations, but it's a fan-favorite among Beatles fans. John Lennon (who wrote the song) rated it as among the best of his early compositions.

I could almost argue that there's no such thing as a hidden gem on an awesome album, given that "awesome album" means a record that is good all the way through.

But I think I know what you mean. Thin Lizzy's album Jailbreak is awesome, but its title track, "The Boys Are Back in Town," and, to a lesser extent, "The Cowboy Song" take the spotlight from this masterpiece: Running Back.

Since it doesn't get a lot of play, "I'll Be Back" will always remind me of "Stars on 45", unfortunately.
