Default As a DC fan..what MARVEL books should I be reading?

I read primarily DC, Vertigo and bit of Image and I often wonder if whether I'm missing any good stuff from Marvel. In my shop I spend more time looking at the Marvel shelf than any other, trying to pick out the gems, wondering why they don't seem to put anything out that interests me.

I AM getting Ultimates and Deadpool Max - these are awesome. Hickmans Ultimates is Avengers done right, in the spirit of Millars original but taken to a new level - cool ideas, tight scripting, irreversible situations (i.e. bombing of Washington DC) and none of the stupidity that reeks from the Ultimate line in general. Artist Esad Ribic is killing it, jaw dropping, highly detailed, energetic and modern art. Overall a very classy book.

David Laphams Deadpool well that's just crack, hilarious, half the time I don't even know what's happening but it's great. Art by Kyle Baker is truly unique in comics and gives a really nice, demented , surreal and pop art painted look.

I'll check out Brian Woods X-Men when it starts cause I love Northlanders. Jason Aaron I know I should like but I've dipped into Wolverine etc a few times and just can't get involved - the things I like about Scalped, hard edged, gritty noir etc don't translate so well to spandex maybe. I'm generally not a fan of Marvels real world, real kewl handle on superheroes, it's just seems silly. And the type of DC books I like you can see from my sig.

So overall I'd just be curious to know, among readers who generally prefer DC and Vertigo style books, what are the Marvel titles you're really enjoying right now?

(Mods can we please not move this to the Marvel board - not really interested in their thoughts )

The only Marvel book I have on my pull list is Waid's Daredevil, and that was only after hearing months of endless praise. It lives up to it so far.

I don't think there's really an awful lot of diference these days, stylistically, between DC and Marvel-there hasn't been since the eighties IMO. But if you want recommendations, I'd say Daredevil is one of he best books out there right now. That, and Secret Avengers.

I'd say Ultimate Spider-Man as the Ultimates do appear in a issue and it's looking like it will semi tie in with it when they're not doing world even type stuff, I'd also say Winter Soldier as it's a spy book with a splash of superheroics from Brubaker. I also get Uncanny X-Force because it's everything a covert ops superhero team should be and if you liked the inner team turmoil in The Ultimates this will be right up your alley, I get X-Men: Legacy, New Mutants along with Wolverine & The X-Men as those two are the more fun superteam books and I guess are what Batman Inc & Animal Man are to you.

I also pick up Amazing Spider-Man since the work Dan Slott has been doing has been great in revamping villains and keeping things fresh and was one of the best of the rotating writers they had on the book a couple years ago, Journey Into Mystery is another good one and would fill in the magic vibe given you pick up JLD.

I plan to pick up Spider-Men and captain Marvel but only one of those is having it's first issue released this week

I think Waid's DD is overrated, is good but some ppl call it the best book in the industry right now and it is not

I think Hickman is the Best Marvel writer at the moment, his FF and Fantastic Four are just excellent, its the whole notion of continuity and legacy and Family that made things like JSA work in DC that are making his the best Fantastic 4 run i ever read

also Rucka's Punisher is one of his best works to the date, he just master Frank's voice immediately at the first chp and Is just amazing on art and tone

and of course, Peter David's X-Factor, I read this book since it came out and its never disappointing, its not great, its not mind blowing, but its consistently good

and finally the only Ultimate comic i read, Ultimate Spider-man, its Bendis greatest book, it always been and it will always be, its what made him such a big force

Huh? The real world is...silly??? Please explain.

Anyway, I'd say you'd probably like Daredevil like the others've posted. I'm a Marvel fan and I avoid that book like the plague mostly because of the hipster-friendly artwork. It is very well-written (have read a couple of issues of the series, so I can testify as to the good writing merits of the title). I can almost guarantee you'll like it based on your list of things you do enjoy and my apprehension (as a staunch superhero supporter) to those kinds of books.

I read very little mainstream nowadays. But given that you like Jonathan Hickman's take on Ultimates, I'd guess you'd like his run on Fantastic Four (and Future Foundation). Its received tremendous acclaim (and I did read first two trades as they were in library, and thought they were good.) Only downside is you'd probably have to start from beginning of run to really enjoy it.... its one long inter-linked story.

Only Marvel current Marvel comics I read are Greg Rucka's Punisher and Peter David's X-Factor. Punisher,I think is outstanding, but maybe as close to a gritty crime/ punishment story as a super hero yarn (though it is set in main Marvel universe). X-Factor... well written light hearted (mostly) team super hero comic, reasonably typical of most of Mr Peter's output.

X-Factor. Perhaps a couple of other X-books, but X-Factor is not negotiable. Peter David writing the best series of his career, doing better stories with a bunch of C-listers than anyone else manages to with any other group. Imagine Johns' GL or Morrisson's Batman if they were a tad better and about 233% more noir.

I've been reading Ultimate Spider-Man off and on since they killed Peter (there was no off before..) and really looking forward to Spider-Men.
Scarlet Spider has been great for me, though I hope he gets more of his own villains soon and not ASM's leftovers.
Last Month I decided to pick up X-Men: Legacy and X-Factor, Road Trip was beautifully written.
Ame-Comi, Aquaman, Batman, Batwoman, Blue Beetle, I, Vampire, JL, JLD, JLI, Nightwing, Red Hood, Superboy, Supergirl, Teen Titans, Scarlet Spider, Ultimate Spider-Man, X-Factor, X-Men:Legacy.

Some of these sound right up my alley. I'll be checking back this thread next in shop and checking out in particular
    Daredevil
    Punisher
    FF
    Uncanny X-Force
    X-Factor

Secret Avengers, I'm gonna wait until everything AvX is well and truly behind. New Mutants and Mystery I've found I just can't deal with Asgardian stuff yet. Spiderman I'll have a flick through but it's never been a concept that grabs me honestly.

Real world + superheroes = silly. When you combine the two. I can't stand it when writers try to force naturalistic dialogue or clumsy political contexts into comics (pretty much every main Marvel series). Likewise when heroes who are everyday Joe type characters and react to their world like we normal people would. They're not real people and I'm not reading comics to find a cute metaphor on the world we live in. I also do quite like the art in Daredevil, hipster friendly ha ha, hopefully an accurate pick from you thanks

Punisher MAX is on of my all time favorites and I've really enjoyed a couple of Rucka longform runs so was intrigued when first heard he was moving to Punisher... then since forgot about it completely! Will definitely check this out along with FF, thanks.

I am not really seeing how Marvel and are in any way diferent in this aspect.
'The marquis. Well, you know, to be honest, he seems a little bit dodgy to me.'
'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

May not be your thing, but the only Marvel stuff I follow is "Young Avengers" they have a few trades out and it pretty much ends with "Childrens Crusade".
It's good if you're more into character's and their lives and since the writer only worked on them every couple years, it's a pretty contained set of series.

I'd peg it not as silly as old school YJ, not as angst as Geoff Johns' Titans.
