I still haven't even seen it.
Nope, don't care. If I cared I'd have rushed out and seen it.
For some reason I haven't been compelled to see this at all.
I've watched all the solo Marvel movies and in the end I found very little I was invested or interested in.
Each and every single one has the hero fight a bigger meaner version of himself for the final act. Each. One. That alone really lost me by the time Cap and Thor rolled out.
So, I was pretty uninterested in the formula being used. The flashy imagery had lost its luster. Cap was a pretty awful movie outside of its visuals, as was Iron-Man 2.
So... like, why would I care about throwing them all together? It just didn't resonate with me. I don't see a lot in the theater anyway. I'll just wait for the DVD.
But the Avengers movie already had some needless bits, like when the Helicarrier takes off, how they cut to the command room for a shot of everyone sitting as the camera pans the room. It doesn't need 37 extra minutes of stuff just added back in, if they're added that much back they should shave some of the pointless crap out.
Now that you mention it, I think you are right. Iron Man vs. Iron Monger and Whiplash, Hulk vs. Abomination, Cap vs. Red Skull, but Thor really didn't have that. I didn't really care for IM2 and the Incredible Hulk is watchable, but not great in my opinion. Having said that, I think that Avengers is much better than the sum of its parts, though.
The Helicarrier lifting off was there to set up a little joke, but there were a few things that were not needed, I agree. However, I loved the movie enough that a rerelease would give me a good reason to go see it again (NOT that I really needed one, but I can take my wife to see it again, too).
But that is the way the majority of the villains for the comics are structured. Hulk usually fights Gamma powered foes. Iron Man usually fights armored foes. So I don't get why people are upset by this. Eventually the movies will have to explore the other foes each hero has faced. And I look forward to when the Red Skull takes on Iron Man.

I have nothing against a good action movie, but this one just didn't compel me to see it. I think once it took off as a giant blockbuster I felt even less compelled. Does that make sense? That sounds weird in my head.
Thor had Loki, his brother, who is the same thing as Thor; God/Alien, and is very much worse than Thor. Maybe not bigger and meaner, but certainly the dark side of the mirror. Iron Mad 2 had those drone Iron Man things at the end as well.

I can understand not having any interest in a film. As far as the giant blockbuster thing is concerned, maybe it is a little weird (I mean, the best action movie of last year, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, was a pretty big blockbuster), but I can understand it if you strongly dislike someone involved in the movie. Pretty much anything involving James Cameron makes me highly unlikely to watch it, for example.
