    Default Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012

io9 is reporting that Ray Bradbury has died.

Ray Bradbury author of The Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451, Something Wicked this Way Comes and many more literary classics, died this morning in Los Angeles, at the age of 91.

We've got confirmation from the family as well as his biographer, Sam Weller.

His grandson, Danny Karapetian, shared these words with io9 about his grandfather's passing: "If I had to make any statement, it would be how much I love and miss him, and I look forward to hearing everyone's memories about him. He influenced so many artists, writers, teachers, scientists, and it's always really touching and comforting to hear their stories. Your stories. His legacy lives on in his monumental body of books, film, television and theater, but more importantly, in the minds and hearts of anyone who read him, because to read him was to know him. He was the biggest kid I know."

That's really sad to hear. I hope he died well and without much pain, in his sleep. It's always a blow to hear about another great mind of the Golden S.F age being lost to us.

I only read Fahrenheit 451, and even that is technically a cop-out since I really read the graphic novel adaptation. Hopefully I will read some of his other works down the line and come to appreciate his contributions to the genre more accurately. Hope he lived a long and full life and died without much regrets.

Everything he wrote through at least the mid-'60s -- & there's a lot of it -- is well worth reading. And probably everything after that, too; I'm just going with what I've read myself.
I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."

    R.I.P. Ray Bradbury.

    My all-time favorite author.

Fahrenheit 451 had more influence on my thinking process than any other single factor.

91 years is a damn good run, and he made it count. One of the most impressive and readable bodies of work in science fiction.

My favorite of his stories was "The Toynbee Convector", a clever twist in the old time-travel theme. I remember reading something Bradbury wrote as an introduction to a comic-book adaptation, how he wrote the story as a backlash to the trend of writing bleak apocalyptic visions of the future and he wanted to show a positive vision.

He was a class act in the science fiction field. He will be missed.

I wrote part of my senior thesis on The Martian Chronicles. I also love his spookier stuff like Something Wicked This way Comes and his kids'/young adult book The Halloween Tree.

His books are linked with some of my earliest reading memories and as such have taken on a sort of mythical status for me. Maybe for that reason I've never gone back to revisit them as an adult, but I fully intend to do so one of these days. Regardless, I rank him up there with the very best American writers in any genre.

I remember reading 'R is for Rocket' and 'S is for Space' as a kid and his more adult oriented (Something Wicked et. al.)stories as I got older. Great writer all around.

And he even met Superboy. Went to Disneyland.

Do a search over at YouTube. I spent an enjoyable few hours watching his lectures during various points of his life. Man was a genius....even more so than I thought back when there was a library near and I was reading his stuff like a kid eating candy.
