I agree that starting the MOTU film with Skeletor taking over was ballsy... I kinda liked that, but I was still enough of a fan of the show that all the other changes bugged the hell outta me, everything from there being no Prince Adam, nothing special about his sword, Teela using a gun and wearing a gray spandex suit (and the god-awful 'Woman-At-Arms' joke after the most unconvincing soldier-shooting-a-bunch-of-enemies scene ever), and Orko being replaced by Gwildor, though Billy Barty's vocal performance made up a bit for him being buried under so much terrible makeup. I'd rather they had Barty play Orko; sure, it'd mean his face was hidden completely, but the Gwildor makeup barely let him emote anyway. The only real obstacles would be how to make his eyes glow without just looking like Jawa-eyes, and getting him to float, though they could use an easy excuse that his magic is weakened on Earth, which has little magic left in it, so he has to walk around on the ground until they get back to Eternia. I had too many preconceptions back then, and was too unwilling to recognize that adapting an idea from one type of media to another generally requires some tweaking.
I agree that the movie, I hate to use this comparison, was a little like a Bay Transformers movie. In that the earth bound humans had more screen time than say THE CHARACTERS THAT YOU PAYED GOOD MONEY TO GO SEE IN THE FIRST PLACE!! Take away the He-Man characters and you'd feel like you were watching some romantic teen movie starring Courtney Cox. Granted they weren't as annoying as Sam from Bay Transformers and the jokes werent as offensive but still. I actually liked Gwildor, I expected him to come off really annoying but he ended up being one of the likeable characters in that film. I was a little let down I didn't get an Teela vs Evil-Lynn confrontation

Now see everything that you wrote Toonimator is exactly why I didn't and haven't yet watch the movie and Legato's comparison to that AWFUL Michael Bay has really taken away from what little desire I had to watch the film. The fact that they totally removed Orko has me irked even more. Also why in the heck is the movie set on Earth instead of on Eternia?

If the movie was produced today it'd be a breeze for them to do Orko seeing as we have CGI and all that. Harry Potter is a perfect example of what all they can do in a Masters of the Universe movie.

If there is to be another Masters of the Universe movie then I'd like for it to be in harmony with the established canon from the 2002 and 1980's cartoon and not a deviation like what this 80's movie that we are discussing sounds like. I mean they can have Skeletor winning and crushing the Galaxy like Darth Vader in The Force Unleashed. But I don't want for the beloved Zoar/ Sorceress to be killed, perhaps beat to a poor pulp but not killed.

Heck, they can even have it bleak like in Lord of the Rings The Two Towers or The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian just as long as they keep it in tune with what we faithful He-Man fans have come to know and love from the TV show and don't muck it up with Michael Bay style garbage which is exactly why I want someone like Peter Jackson, Del Toro or Andrew Adamson to handle the movie and not someone who doesn't care about the Holy Grain material of Masters of the Universe but instead thinks only of the almighty dollar and explosions and cleavage.

reposting for the people who don't read

if you listen to the directors commentary, he was told by Mattel that most of the movie would be set on Earth...that was a mandate and Mattel had people on set to make sure their "notes" were being heeded

The Dolph Lundgren movie, really? I remember thinking it was bad when I was like six or eight or something, the point is even as a little kid who loved He-Man I didn't like that movie. It's not Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III bad, which is just unwatchable, but time is probably better spent watching something like The Beastmaster, or The Sword and the Sorcerer.

Because they couldn't afford to make Eternia look like it does, so they cheapened out and set it on Earth. What's more is that the comic book adaptation put out by Star Comics, featured an earlier draft that was much more traditional. If you want to have a look at the film, check out Youtube. They have the full film. In fact, I'll give you one of the best scenes, but it is in German.

That's got to be bullshit, cheaper movies have been make that take place in that kind of fantasy world setting that Eternia is in. There isn't any reason it couldn't have all been set in Eternia.

It's best to not bother, trust me. Especially if it's not grasped the first time you mentioned it.

    No. Please. Don't.

What I said, has nothing to do with it being a mandate. Mat001 said they didn't have the money to have it set on Eternia. I said that's bullshit. If they wanted to have the whole movie set in the fantasy world of Eternia they could have done it for $22 million, but they (MATTEL) didn't want that.

Wouldn't it flow from our fingertips, or spew forth from our minds? You know, this being the internet and all, and the forum being a text based medium.

Langella has even cited it as one of his favorite roles to do, mainly because his son was so excited about it at the time

He is really fun to watch in that movie, thankfully with Youtube you can watch just his scenes without having to see the rest of the movie.
