Here is the thing..and it's why I wouldn't agree with David Cain being one of the better fathers in fiction either: I think being a good father equates to being a good father for your childs entire life. If you abuse your child for decades and then become this really awesome Dad..you in fact aren't a good Dad at all.

John Winchester wasn't the worst father, but I definitely wouldn't put him on any "best father" lists. Yes he sacrificed himself to save them, though he sacrificed their childhoods in order to exact revenge on a demon as well. Darth Vader sacrificed himself to save his son too..and he's a pretty shitty father.

Any reason why Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck version) isn't being mentioned in a thread involving "all fiction"?

I don't know shooting a wandering dog that is like a kilometer away from your family and isn't threatening, isn't really anything that proves great father, in my books.

And I think the David Cain thing was sarcastic.

As for the best Father, Bryan Mills, as well as his character in Fallout 3, both seemed like pretty good fathers. Poseidon from the Percy Jackson franchise, really seemed to take care of Percy considering the barriers and rules that prevent Gods and their children from interacting.

Objection. He inadvertently made his son the savior of the Galaxy, and gave him a kick ass robot hand. Best.. Dad.. Ever.

Daddy the Father, the former marine sniper and bounty hunter from One Piece.

He gave up his place in military so he could provide peace and security for his daughter. Also he must be considered in the context of near universal deadbeat dads that populate the upper tier of that universe. I think every main character was abandoned by their father, with the possible exception of Brook (and maybe Zoro, but I doubt it).

To be fair, in several of those cases, the dads might be dead rather than having abandoned them. Ussop's, Luffy's and probably Chopper's are probably the only ones that count as actual deadbeat dads, and in the case of the former two, they are kinda wanted men.

In the book it was, and they claimed it was in the movie, but it really didn't appear to be dangerous at all in the film.

If I remember correctly, Ussop's father Yassop chose to become a wanted man after his son was born, choosing the life of a pirate over the life of a father, not that Ussop resents him for it. Not too sure about Luffy's father Dragon though.

Drake Mallard, aka Darkwing Duck. Despite being something of a bumbling dad, if you even consider harming his adopted daughter, he Will Get Dangerous.
