The Phoenix Force had existed for millennium before experiencing Cyclops blast. At best, the blast was like an exotic desert. It could clearly feed on other things, and did since its birth. Endsong was about the Phoenix feeding on the emotions of being loved and adored as much as Scott's hot sticky blast.

And Scott/Emma was Jean invading Scott's privacy and being a helicopter mom.

The Shi´ar awakened it before it was fully restored (after being killed by Xorn), so it was really weak. The Phoenix needed Cyclop´s optic blast to gain energy enough to resurrect Jean; afterwards she fed on Jean´s power.

By the way, I have a question: It has been said that Rachel had a little portion of the Phoenix until her fight with Necrom, when she was forced to call the whole Phoenix Force, becoming the true host of the Phoenix Force. Later Galactus convinced her to renounce most of her power, returning to her old power level, until she got lost in time rescuing Brian Braddock and become Mother Askani.

At some point Jean Grey got a bit of the Phoenix Force (it was after her trip to the future where she raised Cable) until Xorneto killed her, and the Phoenix Force dissapeared until Endsong.

But I know there were some stories of the Phoenix taking host during the period between Rachel and Jean; does anybody know which comics where those?.

I don't recall other hosts between Rachel's Excalibur days and Jean's death under Morrison. Unless, we're counting Ink.

The only thing I can think of is the Phoenix Ressurection crossover between Marvel and the Ultraverse where the Phoenix bounced around from host to host--Prime was one temporarily--before briefly bonding with the Ultra Amber Hunt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Hunt_(comics)

The Phoenix was split into trillions of pieces and is trying to come together. It's alienated. Alienation = being with oneself in one's difference. The Phoenix's true love is itself, duh, just like everybody else.

IIRC the latest word from Marvel is that the Phoenix is not Jean and Jean is not the Phoenix
