Default Fatale: Best ongoing right now?

Admittedly my pull list is far smaller than I would like it to be, but of anything I'm reading now I look forward to Fatale the most. The art is amazing. The story is great. It manages to be Lovecraftian while still being original. A lot of Lovecraft inspired works feel like bad copies. Fatale manages to not only put a fresh spin on existential horror, but also on film noir tropes like the femme fatale. It's like Ed Brubaker looked inside my brain and combined my interests into an expertly drawn comic.

Well yes its pretty great, exactly for the reasons you describe. I love film noir when done right, add some demonic spice to it and its a real winner. I dont know if I'd say its the very best right now but then my pull is kinda crowded and feel like most of the books I follow have a pretty high standard.

My top 3 ongoings are Savage Dragon, Judge Dredd (weekly in 2000AD), Invincible.

For me, quality and quantity mingling is a big thing for being the best ongoing. I dig shorter stuff, but it's tough to compete with a run that's been excellent for decades.

It's good, but not even close. Comics that I think are better include (the first three are my tops): Scalped, Locke and Key, Chew, American Vampire, Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman, The Unwritten, Animal Man, Rachel Rising and I'm sure I'm forgetting some other stuff as well.

I'd definitely call it a strong contender for Best Ongoing, but each to his own; lots of people would disagree.

i don't know how it is now, as i dropped it after 2 or 3 issues.

back then it just didn't seem as good to me as some other Bru books have been.

Definitely up there with Saga and Rachel Rising. I like the multi-layered approach and how all the threads are interwoven together right through the end of the first arc. It also gave birth to new mysteries that create more potential for the second arc.

With all usual qualifiers about it all being totally subjective...

There's some terrific "non-mainstream" comics around now. Fatale is one of them. Other ones that I've read and think are top notch include Manhattan projects, Northlanders, the Boys, and the Goon. (I've always liked the Goon a lot, but the last three I've read have been better than ever. Why should issues 34/35/36 suddenly jump from very good to sensationally good I don't know. It makes me wonder if constant re-launches, changes of writers and artists on other comics often serve to prevent comics coming to full potential.)

It baffles me why so many fans buy say 30 mainstream super hero comics but ignore stuff like the above.... I like super hero comics as much as most people.... but large majority of current mainstream super hero output seems indifferent to me. There's no reason why anybody should take my view seriously... but deep down I believe most people who read 30 mainstream super hero comics would increase their reading pleasure by dropping their bottom 10, and replacing with any of comics mentioned on this thread.

Gah! I forgot Saga. Saga is definitely one of the best comics out right now.

Scalped (though only two issues left)
The Walking Dead (we'll see what 100 brings)
    Casanova (ongoing mini series)
Hellboy (does hellboy count? again, it's mini series)
    Prophet.

that's my top 5. I'm trade waiting Hickman's books, Saga and Fatale.

Is Fatale really that good? I didn't bother with it because I feel the whole Lovecraft pastiche thing has been done to death. Same thing with hard-boiled noir, so a combination of the two didn't appeal to me much. I am curious, however.....
