I don't read a lot of war comics but G.I. Combat, Star Spangled War Stories (with Unknown Soldier) and Sgt Fury are my favourites. I also enjoy the oddball stories in Weird War Tales.

What, no Memorial Day love for "USS Stevens", the great backup series by the even greater Sam Glanzman? These ran across DC's line of war comics from their "Make War No More" era in the late 1960s and early 1970s, all based on true experiences by Sam when he served in the Navy during WWII. I showed a few of 'em to my late father, a Pearl Harbor survivor; his reaction was, "I've looked at some of your comics about the war and they were all bullshit, but these strike me as being by someone who was actually THERE." I've always wished that my dad and Sam had a chance to meet each other; both good men who influenced me in very different ways.

I wonder, does the "Creature Commandos" feature in Weird War Tales counts as a super-hero or a war comic? Anyway, I'm going with Weird War Tales.

The best, and also one that works very well as a stand-alone story.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for that one.

While Captain Storm and possibly Gunner and Sarge would fill Showcase volumes, I doubt we'll ever see Steve Savage reprinted, sadly. Unless perhaps there's a possibility of a volume called smething like Showcase presents Miscellaneous War Series.

    Ah.

I apologise for this inexplicable omission.

Scott is right, guys: this is unsurpassed in the field of war comics. More. That 'war' in the previous sentence needs to be struck through.

That's pretty much what I'm hoping against hope for.
I tend to split superhero comics fans into "People who like Krypto" and "People who don't like Krypto."
Basically, if you miss the wonder of a dog flying around in a little Superman cape, you're in the wrong hobby.
