Interesting assessment. I admit I haven't followed Thanos that much or any of his past stories. However, after seeing the Avengers movie, my interest is definitely peaked. He's one of those top-tier cosmic bad guys who could give any hero a run for their money. He's got the kind of god-complex that sets him apart even from the most boastful of narcissists. I think he will definitely be a worthy foe in the next Avengers movie. I also think he's a character that's worth exploring or giving a new twist in the meantime with the comics.

Kind of. He doesn't have an x-gene but he was born looking different than the rest of the titans.

Strictly speaking, he's an Eternal with the Deviant gene ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deviant_(comics) ). So yeah, in the loose sense, that makes him a mutant.

Yeah. Although I think he was first called one before the "x-gene" was introduced, when mutant just meant mutant in the traditional sense.

Deviant syndrome. Thanos is a titan who are a splinter group of the eternals and Thanos was a genetic aberation in that he is a deviant eternal.

And for years, he was referred to as a "mutant Titanian Eternal."

The Deviant Syndrome explanation makes sense, but it's not how he was originally presented.

Hey, if Namor qualifies for the X-Men, I say Thanos does too ;)

well the celestials created the eternals as an offshoot of humanity, right? so would it be right to say that Thanos is to Eternals what mutants are to humans? or would that just be the Deviants? i never understood what they were supposed to be.

Yeah, that pretty much is the role of Deviants to Eternals. But when you get into the notion that other species such as the Kree and Skrulls have been said to have "mutants" and "Eternals" the water gets more muddy.

offhand, does anyone know how old Thanos is supposed to be? like is there any chance that he fathered En Sabah Nur? i see that the Eternals have fought and defeated Apocalypse, in the past. but i haven't read that story. it just seems like Nur kind of looks like what you might expect from a half-human half-titan. and it couldn't have been pure accident that he was drawn to a celestial ship.

there are also mutant skrulls because Xavier led a squadron of them. i'm trying to learn more about the celestials; through their meddling. it is said that the Eternals have powers because their genetic potential was unlocked. but that's kind of what the x-gene does. so i'm wondering where that gene came from.

I don't think it's canon, but there has been speculation that the Celestials implanted the X-gene.

Here's an interesting article on Thanos' age:
