Default Spider-Man on a team? NO

Yes, spider-man has been on teams for years now. But I want to see if anyone agrees. This thread was inspired by the other thread about avengers vs X-men. He shouldn't be in it at all, because Spider-man shouldn't be on a team at all.

Obviously if he should, Stan Lee would have put him on the Avengers in the 60s. He works much better if hated by the public and works better alone. DC had all their bigs on the Justice league, so marvel had to have their bigs on the Avengers. The two bigs that weren't were, you guessed it- Spider-man and Wolverine. Neither make sense as part of The New Avengers, Avengers, or FF.

I hate reading Spider-man in a team because it doesn't fit and most of them time Spider-man is comic relief. I wish he was removed from alll the teams he is currently on.

I agree as well. I don't really mind him being with a team for bigger events like AvX but I just wish he was used as more than simple comic relief. He is best by himself but every once in a while I think he can do fine on a team, but these times should be few are far between.

i completely and utterly disagree. If writers gave spider-man the attention slott is doing something spidey diserved for YEARS, EVERY team would fight for him on their roster. He is the most acomplished hero, and has the longest experience in crime fighting then anyone else who didnt drink the super cool aid or is pratically imortal. I really liked when the new warriors claimed they were inspired by spider-man, and then someone else put their clutches on them and they started treating spider-man like a amateur just like any other team in MU.

Spider-man should be on teams ? yes,but like batman, only when need arives, like when he was a reservist avenger, he works best on team ups.

I don't think spidey should be on every team. I would like his to have a consistent presence on at least one team, I think he's earned that level of respect. As for him being used as comic relief on teams that's the fault of writers, and I think with the right team he could and should be used to great effect as a member.

It's all about the writer making it work, just like anything else. A good writer can make it work, and another won't pull it off.

Spider-Man on the FF makes a decent amount of sense because he's so close with the family. Spidey on the Avengers is a little trickier, because I don't think he's seen (or maybe "should be seen") as one of the great heroes of the Marvel Universe within the universe itself, but of course to the people of our world, he's second-tier to no one. So it's the writer's responsibility to sell us on the idea, and to be honest, I think he fits quite well on the street-level New Avengers team. The Avengers proper is a little different, but of course, Spidey is surprisingly capable of throwing down with the best of the best, although most other heroes don't often give him the credit he deserves due to his comedic nature and street-level stomping grounds.

I think Peter could also lead specific types of teams too. Spideybr mentioned the New Warriors, with whom Spidey was briefly and loosely affiliated with during the end of the Clone Saga, and I could see him as sort of a "reserve leader" of that team if the writer wanted to have him on the team occasionally.

I see your points, for the ones who disagree. i don't HATE the idea of team ups in big events, but it doesn't make sense from a character standpoint for him to be a regular member in my opinion. Also, this might be a strange point, but i don't even think his powers work well in a team. he works better alone and I can't think of a story with him on a team I found memorable.

I voted yes, but I think he should primarily be on one team (preference here is FF) and be a backup on the rest (Avengers, New Avengers, etc.).

I think it was fine to have Spider-Man on The New Avengers during Straczyski's run, because that's what his Spidey was all about, a more mature Spidey who'd progressed a lot more into a different character from the one we were used to. But after OMD took us back to a younger Peter, back to simpler times for Spider-Man, I think he should have left the Avengers, it's a relic left over from the JMS days that doesn't work any more. Spider-Man joining the FF made sense enough because he's historically been tight with them, but he should have left after Johnny returned. It makes things to easy for Spidey just to be able to call up one of the five hundered Avengers teams or the FF whenever he's in trouble. I miss how he was treated by the Avengers in the 70's, when they thought he was kind of a weirdo, didn't really enter onto their radar and was left to his own devices.

The problem with Spidey being on a team for AvX is that Spider-Man completely pwned the A-list X-Men, and would end this crossover in one issue. (Or three, if Bendis is scripting.) As is, the Avengers have had freakin' Starfox and Deathcry on their team. Spidey running with them ups their own reputation.

Yes, after OMD, the worst spider-man story ever, it makes less sense because the teams never wanted younger Peter.

I didn't think I would WAY back when New Avengers #1 came out, but I gotta admit my opinion changed very quickly when I found myself really enjoying the writing of Peter interacting with his fellow teammates.

It's a dynamic that works and I can't believe it didn't start earlier

I still don't really embrace him as a full-time member of the Avengers. I always thought reserve status fit Spidey better. And even though I think he fits better with the tone of Luke Cage's Avengers than with the "Mighty" crew, I don't ever feel like he would just casually hang around the mansion in his free time. At least not the old Peter, though to be completely honest, I dont really know how his current post-BND life is in terms of work/money/personal stuff.

On the other hand, I think he actually works as a member of the FF; it just feels like a more natural fit given their history and personal relationship [not to mention the science-y stuff].

The only team I support him on is the Fantastic Four and the Outlaws. Avengers not so much.
