Default Will Superman Survive Without Grant?

Title says it all. When Grant Morrison leaves will Superman go downhill? Lobdell is supposed to be taking over Superman so that title, while it may already be, is pretty much dead, Superboy's quality has been really bad since the start, and Supergirl has been rather hit or miss. Can the Superman corner of the DCNU survive when Grant leaves?

Yes, Superman will survive without Grant. For the better part of 70 years talented writers have told brilliant Superman stories. Grant is one of the tops, but Superman has survived just fine without him. I know Grant has a pretty strong following. I enjoy his Superman work quite a bit. Though really, he's only written Superman for a very brief period in Superman's long history. So I think Superman will do just fine when Grant wraps up his tenure.

He's survived for more than 7 decades, he can survive for a few more, with or without Grant Morrison. I'm sure there are plenty of other writers capable of writing Superman.

Besides, I don't consider his Action Comics to be so amazing that it's impossible for another writer to follow up. Then again, I wasn't a fan of All-Star, so maybe I'm not the best person to judge Morrison's work.

It'll be fine. On Action's end, while I'm really enjoying Grant's work, he's not the end all be all of writers. Its not at all beyond the realm of imagination that once his run is finished someone else can come in and do a great job in their own right. Supergirl, I disagree is hit or miss. I think its been rolling pretty much right from the start and quality wise rivals Action. Superboy; it has a direction, and that's most important. The mystery of his donors, the history of clones on Krypton and what that means for him, acclimating himself to society...while not all enjoy the writing these past few months, that foundation is at least there for the future. As for Superman...its definitely the most unstable of the books thus far, with astonishingly poor planning that's resulted in a revolving door of talent and no direction. But that doesn't mean its a dead title. Its disappointing that they blundered so bad with such a marquee title out of the gate, but its far from irrecoverable.

Agreed. Superman will be okay. Might have (yet another) string of bad writers but he's survived low points before. Hell, the last ten years has largely been a low point and here we are with the character back up at the top. Time will tell.

I think the best thing for Superman is for Didio and editorial to find someone who, like Grant, gets the character and what makes him cool, and then to stay the hell away. Editorial mandates have played a large role in killing the quality for years, so remove those mandates and pesky, interfering editors, and just let the talent do what they want. Assuming of course, the talent in question does actually know what s/he is doing with the character.

I have a feeling Grant would have a Superman like we saw in All Star Superman, which is how Superman is supposed to be.

I realize now that I worded it very poorly. What I meant was will we have good stories after Grant leaves? IMO everything, but Action Comics is dying because the stories being told are bad. I am taking sales completely out of the equation and am strictly talking about the quality of the stories being told.

I don't see how you could make the argument the book is "dying". Critically, there's a strong readership that enjoys it , and commercially, it's doing much better than the last two years or something. You can dislike all you want and everything , but a claim of "dying" is very strong when the book has a strong fanbase. I saw the "IMO" and all that, but that's what strikes: saying "a book is dying" is not a subjective (while "I think it sucks" is perfectly subjective, and thus something you are totally entitled to think). When people say "something is dying", it's generally using some sort of facts, like sales, or critical praises, both aspects where the book is doing sort of fine right now. So, IMO, I think the book is in better shape he's ever been for a long time.
As for the "can we have good stories after Grant", I will take my "cilche answer card" and say it depends on who comes after him.

I can easily remember people asking the same question about JOHN BYRNE! :) We see what the answer to that was and Byrne's reboot was as big if not bigger than Morrison's and he wrote multiple titles.

The comic book industry is about keeping the old dinosaurs alive so, yeah he would without a doubt. BTW:I am not buying any Superman books lately, I hate the new Action anyway. I bought the Daily strip hardcover from1939-1942 recently though for 20 bucks.

Honestly, I'm ecstatic to see him go. The stories in the entire superman corner have been pretty horrific since the reboot. Maybe he isn't the cause, but from the few snippets I've seen, he's the last writer that should be on Superman, no matter how good his work is elsewhere.

I think DC are probably aware that when Grant leaves Action, they'll have to get a pretty good writer to replace him ( big shoes to fill and all that) so maybe they'll get someone like Scott Snyder

As for Lobdell on Superman, I won't be so quick to judge until after I've actually read his take on Superman. 'Red Hood' started out a bit shaky but it's gotten better. Maybe Lobdell will write a cool Superman story, stranger things have happened, I don't see why he doesn't deserve a chance

It's Superman. He'll be fine even without any new comics of him printed at all.

Of coarse he'll survive. The question is will he be any good?

I just hope DC have a strong creative team lined up when Morrison packs it in.
