The last Democratic Presidential candidate to win the white vote was LBJ in 1964. Many white voters (particularly in the south) never forgave Democrats for their support for the civil rights movement, desegregation and affirmative action.

    Politico on Obama's election:

Obama ... won the largest share of white support of any Democrat in a two-man race since 1976 amid a backdrop of economic anxiety unseen in at least a quarter-century, according to exit polls by The Associated Press and the major television networks.
    ...
The Illinois senator won 43 percent of white voters, 4 percentage points below Carter’s performance in 1976 and equal to what Bill Clinton won in the three-man race of 1996. Republican John McCain won 55 percent of the white vote.
    ...
A stunning 54 percent of young white voters supported Obama, compared with 44 percent who went for McCain, the senator from Arizona. In the past three decades, no Democratic presidential nominee has won more than 45 percent of young whites.
    ...
McCain won a majority of every other age of white voters, which appeared to limit Obama’s reach into many traditionally Republican states.

Obama performed slightly worse with white women, 39 percent of voters, than Al Gore did in 2000. McCain won the votes of white women, 53 to 46 percent, perhaps an indication of the historical candidacy of his running mate, Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska.

Obama compensated for the drop-off in white female support with the strong 41 percent support from white men. No Democrat since Carter had until Tuesday’s election earned more than 38 percent of the white male vote.

I have the opposite anecdotal observation. I can't ever recall seeing such cars.

There's a lot of talk in the press about Romney having a chance to win Michigan. It's probably because his bus tour is wrapping up there. If Romney wins Michigan after speaking against the auto industry bailout, I will begin to wonder if the whole state had a lobotomy.

Secondly, every poll I have seen has Obama ahead by anywhere form 1 to 14 points in Michigan, with about 6 being the average. Liberal media bias my ass. Why are they trying to talk it up as a possible Romney win?

David Leip's site has one recent poll showing Romney ahead by one point and another showing Obama ahead by only two points. Allowing for the margin of error that's pretty much a dead heat. (The third recent poll has Obama up by 8 but Leip doesn't count anything less than a 3% average lead as significant.)

Currently, Obama's hitting a rough patch. He can still come back if the economy doesn't tank completely.

Then it's a classic example of voters voting against their interests. It's almost hyperbole it's so bizarre.

What do you mean? Romney is the one that was responsible for the auto bailout.

I don't think that Romney has been pushing that claim too hard. I mostly posted it because I found it funny (in a black humor sorta way).

This election just became very interesting because I didn't think Obama's fate would be so tied to the economy. It seems it doesn't matter what he does, as long as the economy isn't looking better he's getting the boot. His poll numbers so far have been tied to it so intently. It's also the one thing neither of these canidates can control that much.

Kind of the opposite of the last election where Obama and McCain were pretty close most of the time and then the economy tanked and from September on Obama started pulling ahead and got the lead that resulted in an overwhelming win on election day.

i have seen a few but it's not the norm. most people in those areas drive beat up cars or cheap Asian cars like Honda, or Hyundai etc...at best they're dependent on public transportation.

Yup. I work in a low income area and everyone rides the bus. Well, almost everyone.

The only thing that makes me scratch my head is the expensive smart phones or Ipods. But I am betting most of those are either paid with debt or bought on the street.

In a related topic. One of my conservative friends on Facebook is ranting about the amount of money spent on pensions. He is a retired government worker collecting a pension.

It's bizarre how blind many are to how the application of their political ideology affects them.
