    Default Best jumping on point

I want to get into the Marvel Universe, but with 70 years or so of continuity, I want to know what is the best jumping on point. I here Avengers vs. X-Men is good, so would that be a good jumping on point for the universe, or would a Point-One of a series be (and which series).

Step-by-Step info on How to break into the Marvel Universe today!:

    1) Buy copies of AvX (aka: Avengers versus X-Men).

    2) If anything in AvX captures your attention and you would then like more specific info regarding your favorite item, it is very likely that you can pick up on those threads in an exsisting Avenger ongoing or an ongoing X-Men title.

    3) If you take to liking a specific character or two found in the AvX event, then check on reputable comic book sites for Marvel items and check to see if the character has an ongoing title at the moment and more specifically if they have a corresponding .1 issue. I find these to be good jumping on points that require no prior experience with the Marvel Universe. These specific books are priced at $2.99.

If you have any furter questions - ask away.

Just 2 questions please. Does AvX start in a way that it sets up the conflict and the characters so its easy to hop on? Also do I also need to pick up the VS book to understand the story? Thanks!

Yes. There's even a page at the beginning of every issue of the series that catches lapsed readers up to speed, recapping what's come beforehand.

Also do I also need to pick up the VS book to understand the story?
VS is not required reading. That series only contains ongoing fight stories that couldn't be contained in the main series, AvX.

You're welcome. It's easy to get swamped with backlogging, but one thing that makes AvX such a great starting point is that it features loads of Marvel characters - large and not-so-large. I think that you'll like what you read, especially now since there's multiple issues out.

Avengers Vs. X-Men will help because it has so many Marvel characters in it, but most Marvel books get a lot deeper storywise than AvX seems to be getting. If you want a few good Marvel characters to start reading I have some reccomendations:
    1) Daredevil- hands down the best comic Marvel has running right now, great art and great writing, and it's easy to start at any issue.
    2) Scarlet Spider- a fresh take on part of the spider-man mythos.. a clone of Spider-Man goes from drifter to reluctant hero in Houston, TX
    3) Any Ultimate comic. Pick one that seems interesting. The Ultimate Marvel Universe is unique and worth checking out.

I saw there is a thing called Avengers vs. X-Men: It's Coming TPB. Would that make the enterance into the Marvel universe easier, or just leave me with wanting all of the story arcs it collects? I want to be economical, but I also want to read the storylines leading up to AvX.

If you want to jump into the Marvel universe it would probably be better to wait until AvX is over and the new status quo is set up.

That particular TPB may very well entice you to expand on those collected issues, but those issues will give you a touch better insight to the whole of AvX.

Also, seeing as you want to be economical you may do yourself a favor and hunt down both Marvel Backlist Reading Chronology #1 and Marvel Your Universe Saga #0. Both should only cost you a few bucks at most and will lead you in a comprehensive direction that is invaluable.

Don't get it, it will just confuse you.

Avengers vs X-Men: It's Coming collects a scattered assortment of issues from various important lead-up storylines without really giving you a beginning or ending to any of them.

    You're better off either:
    a) Just jumping straight into AvX, using the recap pages at the start of each issue
    b) Getting the previous storylines in full instead of this expensive preview. I should warn you, the backlog is pretty big.
