The CBR review is fair in it's analysis

and this premiere may have had more familiarity than freshness (for longtime readers) but I am a big fan of Byrne's writer/artist Fantastic Four and Alpha Flight runs and this had all that fun. And deserves a thread about it. Yet, I also agree with the statement about the need for newness.

That apparent newness is enough to bring eyes to the book, but it might have to work on being legitimate newness in order to keep them here.
Still, in their own amalgamous ways the trio did have a couple tidbits shown of newness like Scissors being named Ahmed struck me as different. Then there is Paper who cannot easily survive damage with typical rubbery resiliency. And one highlight with Rock was that they actually showed his inistence to stay behind after the bad guys were bagged to personally dig for survivors alongside the rescue teams. They were part of a solid story for being a #1 - even though the threat of the Fish Men felt a lot like Aquaman's nu premiere so hopefully this fish tale takes a direction of it's own that is fresh, next issue.

I thought it was a fun issue.

I've now learned that it will be a 5-issue mini-series, with the idea that Byrne will do further mini-series rather then an ongoing comic, and he will pretty much have full rein to do what he wants.

I liked it. It's a good start with the characters.

John Byrne, please keep releasing your books on this great paper stock. I love it.
