So, in addition to the other stuff I suggested, maybe blocking needs to be more efficient in general and attacks way more lethal. (Though also better balanced, since there's already enemies that can murder you in a few hits if you're not rather high level.)

Assuming we're talking about enemies here, that's mostly because of the way non-leveled enemies are thrown at the player, as opposed to only the player only being able to encounter them at certain points in the game.
