If the character is just made up out of thin air.
If the character is just made up out of thin air.

I just don't get this. The characters that get compared to Jean generally are just like her on the most superficial levels i.e appearrance. Rachel is an orphaned holocaust survivor. Hope is an orphaned time travelling freedom fighter. Those two have far more in common than either has with Jean and even then they are very very different characters. I get so sick of hearing the "jean Grey" clone thing.

I think that has to do with how you say they are similar on the most superficial level: You basically don't have to bother getting to know a character before judging them to be a Jeanchlone, if she looks like her and could possibly take the place Jean once held with the X-Men she is one (that's the only reason I can think of why anyone would call Frost a Jeanchlone...). And once there's the established prejudice it's hard to shake it off. Personally I'm just annoyed by the Phoenix thing because I can't imagine a cosmic force bothering to always look the same xD'
When they start inexplicably being boring as shit (ie: Emma Frost since about 2004). Even Jean Grey's actual clone was a far more compelling character.

Why do people act so goofy about this when it comes to Jean?
You don't hear X-23 fans crying about how X-23 isn't some BS legacy character. I mean, Hope and Fonji and the next Phoenix they try to replace Jean with are all clones/legacy characters.
If you all would trash the repeats immediately, maybe creators would put more effort into trying to make new characters instead of happily taking credit for "creating" so and so's kid from the future with the same classic look and powers as so and so.
If you like Fongji and/or 99% of legacy characters in general, you are helping to make comics bad and giving creators credit for other people's work.
Not to say legacy characters can't have good stories (I like X-23, suck it haters), but to pretend they aren't cheap attempts at automatic staying power is disingenuous.
Sorry Brevoort, Alonso and Lowe, but Jean Grey is a classic character. She'll outlive you regardless. :)

IDGI, Jean is a legacy character.
Of the few "jean-clones", only Rachel has the same power-set as Jean Grey.
The fact that Hope kinda looks like Jean (red-head) was probably just a hint of what was coming (the Phoenix force). They made it on purpose, yes, but they clearly are not the same character.
And we don't know who is Fongji yet.
1) Red Hair
2) Phoenix Connection
3) Summers/Grey Relation
And they usually have similar personalities
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Rachel was never really acting like Jean I think, if anything with her it's easy to understand the similarities in powers and looks because she's Jean's daughter so I wouldn't call her a clone
Madelynne: At first she was a Jean-look-alike without powers, than she had different powers and went crazy. I don't see Jean wearing an SM-outfit and call herself the goblin queen or red queen while spanking one of her toys
Hope: Kid, no character smiliarities, different powers, not that much to say about her yet since she's still pretty new
The only Jean Grey clone is Madelyne Pryor, and that's from a literal standpoint. I love Hope, Rachel, and Jean all in their own rights - sure, they might have similar appearances or powers, but the powers don't make the character. Fongji... I think that she's contrived, but not a clone.
