I'm going to say it's not an origins book. Rather it's the "first X-Men" book starring a new generation of mutants, i.e. the younger mutants that are popular now. I see this more as the "first X-Men" since M-Day and a new team of younger mutants are assembled and given a purpose and represent a new generation of X-Men. I'm thinking Pixie, Quentin Quire, Broo, and some others, maybe even Hellion.

seeing as they're promoting this book way before the end of AvX I can't see it as a project that follows the events of that.

It's must be something totally separate as there's no way they'd spoil the story to promote a book that may or may not sell.

There could be some sneaky foreshadowing in it but I doubt it would be a direct tie-in.

Part of me immediately thought that the X-men take over the whitehouse as a final answer to their persecution and we get President Summers and First Lady Emma, but I can't imagine Marvel would take it that far other than in a What If...?

I'm suprised they would tease something like this so early, but they did say they were more excited about post-AvX than AvX itself.

I'm more excited about post AvX than AvX as well...this mini hasn't really been anything special, with the exception of #0, which has been the best issue of the lot so far. As to this "first X-Men" business, I hope it's not another retread of X-Men:The Lost Years/X-Men: First Class. Marvel has trolled us all before with teasers like this that don't amount to much (witness the X-Treme X-Men debacle and the endless "return of Jean Grey" covers), so I am being VERY cautious. It will probably be another retcon that reveals that there was yet another team of X-Men we never knew about who operated for a year or so before the original 5. I'm guessing the membership will be Sabretooth, Mystique, Sage, Amelia Voght, and Dr. Nemesis.

I'm betting this is a "bubble reboot" along the lines of "Heroes Reborn" from the 90s that will shake up the X-Men for a while before returning to a more familiar (similar to right now) status-quo except that a few key deceased X-Men will be back (maybe Jean, Nightcrawler etc.) and perhaps Xavier will retain a larger role. Or something along those lines.
