Default Where Do You Start When Drawing A Face?

I know this is a pretty basic question but I'm just curious as to where other people start when drawing a face? I have been reading some comic art instructional books and they always tell you to start with drawing the outline of the head. Ever since I was a child I always started on the nose, lips or eyes, and now I've started drawing again I can't get out of this habit!

I always make an outline of the head so that when you draw in the eyes, nose, and mouth everything is symmetrical

Whatever works for you. if I have to have the face in a specific area, I find the drawing the outline first makes sure I get it the right size. But I've had classes where I've been taught to do it both ways.

This is real simple when building a house you don't start on the roof you start with the foundation. Same thing with drawing always start with a foundation and all the hard work you put into a piece will pay off every time, instead of wasted effort to finish something that was not grounded in basic structure.

I guess that drawing the head outline does make sense.

When you folks are drawing the actual face, and putting in your guide lines, how do you divide the face up? I do a line down centre, where the middle of the face would be, but am never sure how to divide it up after that. Is it good to draw a line in the middle, for the eyeline, or divide the face into 1/3s?

you should be drawing from life and photo references always at this stage. Just look at peoples faces, really study them, and you will figure out your own way of dividing it up and drawing it
