Id disagree with the no one being upset. Practically everyone in the sold out cinema gasped at the death. I really hope he comes back because spoilers:

I agree. Coulson was a nice addition to the movies and my girlfriend was upset he was killed. And d*** move on Fury's part to smear blood all over his Captain America trading cards (those were near mint!)

Someone important had to die to give the moment significance and he was the really the only choice.
Price your book at $3.99 and I'll trade wait. Make me wait too long for the trade PAPERback and I'll say screw it. I'm looking at you Marvel and Spider Island.

The comics Avengers didn't need someone to die to motivate them. They came together on accident and hit it off. (Well, except for Hulk)
Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker, Professor X, Mar-Vell, Richard Rider- Bring Them Back!!!

That was almost 50 years ago; things (and audiences) change. And comics and movies don't necessarily work the same way in terms of storytelling.

So much for Coulson's death being a trademark Whedon moment.

I wasn't upset when he died. Don't know why, maybe because The Avengers was the only movie where he plays a major role and because I always saw Christine when I saw him, lol. But I got a bit sad when I saw the movie again.

And much as we all love the concept the story writing back then wasn't really that good.

Yeah, I feel like the movie pulled it off and didn't make it lame. I mean they could've had them team up in the beginning, but that would suck. Instead they didn't like each other at first while Tony Stark didn't like the idea of being in a team, because he doesn't work well with others. The motivation of Phil's death made the film much better because when someone dies, people Avenge them, like Peter Parker did when Uncle Ben died.

They didn't say that no one was upset they said the out cry has been "muted". Frankly I think it's because people don't want to spoil that part of the movie in discussions. Just a thought. I agree with you though, everyone in the theater with me gasp and were dead quiet when Fury said he was gone.

I understand why it was part of the story, but am still bummed because I love Clark Gregg.

That's the other thing -- they were all kind of jerks to Hulk. Now they have a little more specific motivation, no pissing off the big green guy.

    Well, Thor, maybe.
