Default Exiled: Journey Into Mystery/New Mutants Crossover *Spoilers*

The first chapter in the Journey Into Mystery crossover with the New Mutants was a PACKED issue of set up, told with the fun and wit I expect from Gillen's Journey Into Mystery. I really haven't warmed to DnA's New Mutants, but here, things move along fairly quickly and Gillen and DnA's writing meshes well. I have a feeling that Carmine Di Giandomenico's pencils aren't going to be to everyone's taste, but I LOVE them. He can draw anything, real or imaginary, and can he pack a panel! Yet I've no trouble at all following the story. Check out the preview pages for his amazing recap of the history of the Disir. Lovely use of vertical panels that give it a stained glass vibe. And his version of Mephisto's hell is definitely creepy ... all the eyeballs and weird angles ... great stuff. I'm hoping he'll be the artist across all five issues, which will make for an artistically consistent story -- a rarity these days. I also have to give a nod to Andy Troy, the colorist, as there are several lighting / energy effects that he pulled off quite well.

    WHAT HAPPENED:
Zig, a neighbor of the New Mutants in San Francisco, isn't what he seems, i.e. a Peeping Tom. He mistakes Leah for Hela when she dropped off one of the Hel-Puppies. Hel-Puppies is adorable in a pink ribbon. Clearly, the New Mutants got the good 'un.

Breakfast at the New Mutants house, where Dani 'encourages' Sunspot to find employment. Dani notices Zig's Peeping Tom turn and runs over to confront him. Mistake. He 'sees' she's a Valkyrie and panics, and dons his armor revealing himself as 'The Final Portion' which apparently frees the Disir from Mephisto's hell. Mephisto immediately tells Loki and blackmails him into recovering the Disir.

Loki tells Leah to go tell Hela. Loki tells Thor who tells the Warriors Three and Sif. Loki REALLY is hopeless with Thori. He needs to watch some Cesar.

Dani, the Disir, the Asgardians, and Hela's contingent all arrive at the same time, and Zig reveals himself as Sigurd the Ever Glorious, Legend of Legends and The Final Portion (NOT the nickname you want the Disir to assign you). He reads a scroll and the Asgardians disappear.

Epilogue: Nearby, a young dark haired boy named Luke is told to stop reading by his one handed foster mother.

We have the same creative team on this issue, though I'm unclear if Gillen wrote all of this, as the cover doesn't list DnA, but the interior credits do ... regardless, this was a wonderful issue, with some great laugh out loud moments from the dialog and from sight gags. Carmine Di Giandomenico again knocks it out of the park with his pencils, drawing two of the most adorable Kid Loki panels ever! I also like his Warlock, especially in a hoody. And Andy Troy continues to deliver on the coloring, with some nice work portraying the characters through glass, that emphasizes the distorted roles of the mortal Asgardians.

    WHAT HAPPENED:
As seen in the preview, Chapter Two picks up right after the end of Chapter One, with the New Mutants out in the street wondering what the heck happened. Turns out that the Asgardians have been transformed into mortals, with mortal jobs and we spend a good portion of the issue, meeting them in their new guises, in a most entertaining fashion.

    • Thor: a blond mechanic (CARS <3) named Arthur???
    • Fandral: a bar owner who looks sharp in a pale suit with a green tie.
    • Loki: is the aptly named Luke who likes games.
    • Leah: Luke's foster sister named Leigh and the bane of Loki's existence.
    • Hela: Luke's foster mother named Helen, who picks up recyclables.
    • Hogun: is a barber.
    • Volstagg: of course, runs the bakery.
    • The Disir: are suffering from eating disorders.
    • Thori: is still a hell puppy and bane of Luke's existence.
    • Sif: a Mixed Martial Arts teacher who wants Luke to learn how to defend himself.
    • Tyr: a disabled war veteran beggar who belives Luke is nothing but trouble.

Luke runs into the New Mutants who recognize him and help him remember himself. We discover that Luke is a fan of mutants, which may explain why he wants to grow up to be the King of Atlantis. And the idea of Kid Loki in a kid safe Wolverine Halloween costume is hysterical! ROFL!

And they then go to Sigurd's house to look for clues and discover Sigurd is a 'deeply selfish man' who is going to let our heroes take care of returning the Asgardian to themselves, as he believes the Disir should stay under the spell and remain 'harmless.'

Epilogue: One of the Disir discovers she is NOT harmless.

Don't know how I missed Exiled last week, when I actually was looking for it! but happy to have caught up with it, and JIM, this week.

Correct, Carmine Di Giandomenico's pencils aren't going to be to everyone's taste. While there are good moments like the history of the Disir mentioned (also previewed) I find I'm reacting in much the same way as to Portacio's earlier stint on JIM. No problems with never-seen stuff, great demons and similar, lots of neat details around like Sigurd's melted armchair in JIM #637, but doing a lot wincing at the early renderings of the Asgardian regulars. Especially faces on small figures--lots of sharp edges and distortion. I'm also fairly sure I wouldn't recognize any of the New Mutants except Dani and Warlock if I didn't know that's who they were meant to be. That said, with 2 of 5 issues down, yeah, I'd rather see him continue and have that artistic consistency in the final product.

Thoroughly enjoying Sigurd as laid-back, doesn't-give-a-sweet-**** skirt-chasing Viking displaced to San Francisco. And first panel of Thor as big, blond guy who works as a mechanic was hilarious. Not real sold on Loki except for what I'm thinking is probably one of those two cutest panels!

Best single line of many in the whole, might just be Fandral's: "If any of us could say 'no' to you, think how peaceful our lives would be."

YES! Bolded, underlined and made BIG for a 100% agreement. JiM is my favorite Marvel book right now. It's consistently awesome! And I'm loving this event, even moreso in comparison to AvX. And YES! Thank you for posting that panel. So, so, funny. Can you post the other panel you posted on the X-board, Luke in the X-costume? That was one the two awesomely adorable panels of Kid Loki that I was referring to.

Don't resist! There's only five issues in total, and all by the same artist! Buy them all and don't miss out on a panel of fun.

That was the one I figured qualified, as one of the two, too. So cute!

So, what is Luke's X-Man code name? "Loki" is too obvious.

That was so Fandral! I was wondering about Thor's name, though, as doesn't this tie into the Otherworld and Arthurian matters? Or am I getting ahead of myself on JiM stories? And there were soooo many good lines here, it is hard to choose.

It's taking me a bit to reconcile Zig and Sigurd the Dragonslayer. Of course, the latter is an assumption on my part. But Thor, and actually the reveal of all of the Asgardians, were cool. I though Amara was going to just leap on Thor, though. LOL!

Carmine Di Giandomenico's work will grow on you -- at least, it did for me. I'm betting by the end of the series you'll look upon it more favorably.

The Disir escape in Exiled #1 due to Sigurd's reappearance. IIRC, someone also referred to Sigurd as Bor's Blade, so between that, and the horrifying name of "The Final Portion" he is clearly tied to the Disir and their curse. That's Hela's 'mortal' guise. She looks like she was in a bad accident. She is her usual terrifying beauty when she's not 'mortal.'

He's called Arthur because it has "thur" in it, which sounds like Thor. It's really that simple. Hence Fandral / Andy, Loki / Luke, Hela / Helen etc.
