It's funny, and I want to gay marry the guy behind her, but I have heard many of her statements before.

In news that will surprise absolutely nobody, this lady is apparently a diagnosed schizophrenic.

Svoboda lives at an assisted-living facility in Lincoln and is listed as a protected person, according to court documents. Her brother, Patrick Svoboda of Ogallala, is her conservator because she is incompetent, the documents say.
He was unaware of the video's popularity, but wasn't surprised -- he knew it would be a matter of time before she got in trouble somewhere.
He said he's disappointed the video garnered such attention and jokes without the whole story.
"To me, it shows how little society really cares about people with mental health issues," Patrick Svoboda said. "She does have a very tender heart ... but anything she says is certifiably schizophrenic ... she's not some crazy conservative."

To me, it's not so much that we don't care about people with mental illness, it's that the level of insane homophobic ranting shown in this video is so pervasive in society that it's hard to tell whether any given example is mental illness, or just your average Fox News viewer.

To me, it's not so much that we don't care about people with mental illness, it's that the level of insane homophobic ranting shown in this video is so pervasive in society that it's hard to tell whether any given example is mental illness, or just your average Fox News viewer.

I have heard most of what she said from people who aren't schizophrenic. The only difference between them and her is that she said it all in a row in front of a microphone.

Maddow brought this issue up, and it's something I've pondered since Prop 8 in California.

Personally I think it's because the bigots are more passionate about their position than your *average* person who supports marriage equality. I think many, perhaps most supporters of marriage equality are somewhat casual about it. I live in NC but I'm registered to vote in CA, so I couldn't vote on the recent measure.

The Republicans know full well the shift taking place in public opinion. They're gettin' while the gettin's good. These state-by-state constitutional amendments are a preemptive measure to make change take place more slowly.

I could be wrong but if you are seen as a extremely passionate supporter of gay rights publicly then people (wrongly) assume you must be gay or in the closet.

It's a shame but most politics come down to personal identity.

When, ironically, it's usually the opposite; if you're stridently homophobic to the point of becoming utterly tedious, you're usually a repressed closet case.

It wouldn't be the first time it's happened to me.

My take has always been very simple: The right to freedom of religion does not include the right to impose one's religious beliefs on those who do not share them.

As for the difference between public opinion and the vote, I think that's because many supporters don't think it's as important as many of those who are opposed to it. They are insufficiently concerned about what other people do to want to focus too much attention to it.

I decided it was better to bump an existing marriage equality thread than to make a new one.

A lady in the UK has written a marvelous open letter to a newly-married couple who could think of no better way to kick off their married life together than to deliver an anti-marriage equality petition to 10 Downing Street. Dressed in full wedding attire, just to really rub it in the faces of all the couples to whom they would seek to deny equal rights.

I watched with great sadness as a beautiful bride and handsome groom, who have recently embarked on the journey of married life together, chose to spend what is surely one of the happiest times of their lives delivering a petition that is ultimately designed to deny that right and that happiness to others.

It really strikes me as a remarkably petty and mean-spirited thing to do.

Naturally, they're getting heat from the religious crowd.

I think I am going to buy a pack of Oreos today. Hoping my sale can counteract a potential lost sale.
