I can understand some being irked by the lack of Avengers in an Avengers comic but I really liked this issue. Looking forward to seeing how it ties in with current events.
Maybe handling the Phoenix requires a certain 'fiery' personality. And there's no question Fongji was ANGRY.
So the Phoenix force is a metaphor for rage. Use it and control it and it gives you strength. Let it take over and you'll feel powerful for a while, but you'll do things you'll regret.
I like that the struggle with Shou Lao apparently took several days. Does it usually happen sooner?
are the white shirts just a mistake or is there going to be a reason for it?
I don't mind no Avengers appearing, but only if this story plays a big part in the event. Only if it goes somewhere. That Sentry "angel of death" thing really didn't, so I hope this isn't just going to be another afterthought with real no effect on the story or continuity.
Where it's going is that Danny Rand will learn that a previous, heretofore unknown, Iron Fist mastered the Phoenix and held it safely, and that he must now find Hope, conduct her to K'un-Lun, and see to it that she becomes the Iron Fist so that she can likewise contain its power.
What that will mean for Danny, the incumbent Iron Fist, is hard to say. I hope it's not going to involve his tragic sacrifice.
"All this has happened before, and all this will happen again."
That's the impression I get from this arc. Hope and Fongji are part of a cycle!
Maybe it's Hope's destiny to become the next Iron Fist?
This sounds totally logical. As an aside, prior to the Immortal Iron Fist series, Danny has sacrificed himself before to save the world. and he's come back from it. So it's not unlikely he'll make some sort of sacrifice on his part to preserve both Earth and K'un-Lun.
Now we just need an explanation for the white jerseys!
Trust me. I have a plan. -- Daniel Rand, the Immortal Iron Fist
White and gold means the power is compromised somehow? Danny's apparently been marked by Agamotto (or so intuitive people tell me -- who must be reading tea leaves or consulting oracles, since I don't find it anywhere in Bendis), and Fongji is able to draw on the Phoenix Force.
While I'd love nothing more than Iron Fist to get the exposure I feel he deserves, doing it in a way which would require him to sacrifice himself for the sake of having Hope become the Iron Fist and fighting the Phoenix wouldn't be worth that tradeoff for me, even if he does come back.
The way I see it is that if Fongji could control the Phoenix by being the Iron Fist, why can't Danny Rand? I didn't see anywhere in the story that indicated the Phoenix was going after her as a host specifically, so I'm not sure why Danny couldn't just step up to the plate in this situation as the Iron Fist like Fongji did.
