Okay. You're asking a lot here, but I'll do my best. All of Apocalypse's tech is based on that given to him by the Celestials. He used this tech to transform Angel into his Horseman, Death. This involved grafting on metal wings, turing his skin blue, brain-washing, etc. Warren was ultimately able to resist Apocalypse's influence, but he remained physically altered. Then, through unexplained circumstance, Warren's body changed further, the wings became feathered again and he gained a secondary mutation of a healing touch. Then, Warren realized that he still possessed aspects of the Death persona Apocalypse had engendered in him way back when. He gained the ability to transform back and forth from his original feathered-wing form to his blue-skinned, metal-winged form. Every time he made this transformation, the Death persona gained a greater and greater grasp on his overall psyche - until it finally took over and this led to the Dark Angel Saga in Uncanny X-Force. There, Betsy was forced to kill Warren by stabbing him with the life-seed (also Celestial Tech). This killed him, but also recreated his body (albeit with a blanked mind). The new body the life-seed created was sort of a mix between Angel's two forms (caucasian skin but metal wings).
Warren's original personality has been erased so it stands to reason that the death persona has been deleted as well.
Whether or not the Death persona will ever return waits to be seen - but with the cyclical nature of comic stories, I'd venture to say that it probably will.

I think they explained this somewhere that the promotional art for AvX was commissioned well in advance of the actual event and, thus, doesn't reflect what the actual match-ups will be and why Warren was in Archangel mode.

And we're all supposed to ignore the fact that Gambit is running around with a Death persona, too, right?

Yep. Until otherwise referenced by a writer.

I believe Remender said on Twitter that when Angel came into his place as Apocalypse or when the Life Seed cleaned him out it got rid of the Death part of Gambit

I think he just meant the wings, Angel now has the metal wings but looks human.

And yes, Deathbit never happened! Move along, nothing to see here.

Even without the personality, he could still potentially transform if pushed far enough. At least I would think he could.

Gambit is so horrid, why are we even discussing him?

After reading this, i'm not sure who's right, Scott or Wolverine, and i have a bad feeling it's gonna hit the fan for the Xmen when all is said and done. I'd like to know more about the students- they each seem to represent a pivotal part of X-history, but who are they?

    she was in last issue!

But my theory is that WaTXM happens in one wing of the school and legacy happens in another and kitty likes to keep their cast as separate as possible!

Same reason the Casey/Austen Uncanny team were conveniently gone for everything important in Morrison's New X-Men (even though Wolverine was usually with both teams in the books), or the other teams during Whedon's Astonishing.

It's a weakness of having different books taking place in the same location. Lots of assuming about "off-panel missions."
