Thank god for Morrison on Action because the main Superman title has been a complete mess.
I don't know, I think it could be funny, and there's always room for some humor in Superman. Not everything has to be a Morrison-esque epic to be a readable comic.

I am looking forward to this! It's been a long time since we have had a fun, goofy cosmic story with Superman, and this looks to be just that, with Giffen writing.

I also hope that this means the current team on SUPERMAN is staying. True, Giffen and Jurgens hadn't quite set the world on fire, but I'd say at least give them a solid year before replacing them. They have both said that they have long term plans for the book beyond the initial few issues, and I for one would like to see what they can do. The first issue showed so much potential in the right direction. Dumping them, then replacing them with Lobdell so soon seems like crap and a sign that the Superman office is flailing and has no idea what to do with the character beyond Grant Morrison.

Now...if they want to start a third Superman book with Lobdell or move the current Giffen and Jurgens team to it, then maybe we can talk. THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN or MAN OF STEEL, would be a nice tittle,

I also like that cover. I hope that is the same interior artist. The suit actually looks good. Hardly no lines and that collar is a nice in between the classic version and the "nu" version. I still think the belt could benefit from some yellow on it, but it is what it is.

As for Mongul, seeing how the one Pre-Flashpoint was actually the "original" Mongul's son...it would be no big deal to reintroduce 'papa', especially if this turns out to be an "untold" tale set within the five years between ACTION #1 and SUPERMAN #1 telling a new version of Superman's first meeting with Mongul . Also, who's to say, with FLASHPOINT there couldn't be two Mongul's lurking about? Father could be still alive while the Son is Hal's enemy.

Actually they could have their own comic called "Mongul and son". The premise is that they both co-own their own cosmic junk yard and the son wants to be an actor and not a junk man and despot, to the chagrin of Mongul Sr., who constantly calls him a "big dummy" and routinely fakes heart attacks to guilt trip him. The wackiness insues when Dragga drops by for a visit. Comedy gold, me thinks.

If Giffen is working on Superman, can Ambush Bug be far behind?

Yes agreed. I have found that the new suit is starting to grow on me. I also agree that there should be yellow in the belt. Like the buckle part that looks like the Superman "S" shape(pentogram?) That part should be a Superman S with yellow.

Nice cover, I suppose. I hope this means that Giffen will continue in Superman for the long term and the rumor about Lobdell taking over it's just that. I want to read a Superman penned by Giffen without all those silly editorial mandates.

I very hope so. Mongul is a villain I would like to see more.
Anyway, best pitch by the Griffen and Jurgens team so far. The space reality show idea is completely wacky, and that's what makes it work. I really hope the execution is going to be good, but so far the way they did an honest job so why not?

But I'd love to find that he's writing Superman full time, and that Jurgens taking over last solicited issue was just due to the time constraints of writing this oversized annual + co plotting and drawing Legion of Superheroes with Levitz (which is what I'm REALLY excited about).
I'd be more excited if it was Jurgens co plotting and drawing Legion of Superheroes, and not Giffen.

I love Giffen art on some things, but not Legion of Superheroes.

Different strokes, I guess. I want Jurgens far away from anything I enjoy. I haven't yet seen something Giffen couldn't do well.

LOL! Yeah, I can tell by some of your other posts in the forums, that you're not to keen on Jurgens.

Oh, I definitely think Giffen is a much better writer than Jurgens, but I think Jurgens is a great artist, who I think just fits Legion better. However I have to admit that I'd be interested to see what it would look like drawn by Giffen, curiosity wise.
    I seriously miss Captain Mar-Vell.

Giffen will do just fine as long as he basically puts Superman into Doom Patrol storylines. Sure, the dynamic between Clark, Lois and Jimmy isn't as odd as Larry, Rita and Cliff ... but that's definitely the right track to take. They even all answer to "The Chief", so-to-speak.

As long as Giffen stays in Superman and those rumors about Lobdell taking over are wrong.

You'd be interested to see what the Legion looks like under Giffen? Giffen is probably the most notable, long running Legion artist of all time, alongside Dave Cockrum. He's had 4 separate artistic runs on the Legion (first time with Levitz, second long run with Levitz, third run with Levitz at the end of v3, then he launched v4 with the Bierbaums), plus has guest pencilled a couple of times here and there (DnA's Legion and the recent Legion Annual with Levitz for sure).

You can literally watch his development as an artist if you look at his various Legion runs; my personal favorites were the issue 50-63 of v3 and the early years of v4 (5 years later), but that's his more modern style. I think the style he employed in his second Levitz run, on Great Darkness Saga, was the one that was most popular.
