Female Takes on Jack Kirby

As someone who has been reading american comics for years and back-read Lee,Ditko but not read Kirby comics yet which series would you recommend first ? I have of course heard alot of how important he is historical in the field. For some reason i havent read him yet. I prefer if you recommended a non-superhero work of his first. I like other genre classics of american,western comics.

Since I don't really read it as a superhero book, I'd go with New Gods.

I like the sound of those stories, i dig SF like cosmic stories in the superhero genre. I see in amazon Fourth World omnibus vol 1 collects New Gods,other linked stories.

Yeah, the New Gods stuff really isn't a super-hero story, it is a cosmic space opera, long before Star Wars.

It was that stuff that won me over as a kid. I remember reading my brothers DC Comics and coming across this:

Forever People. Kirby's later Thor and FF stories have some of his photo collages but his DC stuff is full of it and it's insanely wonderful for it. So anyone pointing at Kirby going 'he's boring' (and I've heard that a lot over the years) point them to that stuff.

That was one of the main drivers of Forever People: Beautiful Dreamer gets kidnapped and has to be rescued.

But was that her only function?
Its been awhile since I've read the New Gods stuff, I will admit.

Which calls to mind the very first Anti Life Equation plot in Forever People. And in spite of that, I still can't find any overwhelming lack of feminine grace and beauty in Kirby's female characters. If anything, I see a contrast....the craggy crusty "trauma" guys versus beauty and hope.



But whatever, I'm just reading into things here.

As already noted, it was implied that she was an important key to the mystery of the Anti-Life Equation. However it could be argued that Bekka, Himon's daughter and Orion's wife served no real purpose other than being a love interest.

I wouldn't say i'm a huge fan of Kirby but i respect all that he has done and contributed to comics.

opinion are just that opinions unless Sarah Boxer has like a degree or phd in american superh-hero comics i don't find her opinion any more or less valid than anyone else's online.
