And you know what else? The crusty, rugged, craggy, weird looking guys don't really show up in Kirby's work until after his return from WW2. This dude spent time in the trenches. He actually killed people, was present at the liberation of a concentration camp. He experienced some trauma, and translated that into the artistic choices that he made. So when Boxer says she can't enter Kirby's world and that it is repulsive, she's right. She can't enter his world because she can't comprehend his trauma.

Jeff, re: Shulz. I wrongly assumed he was jewish because of Bruno Schulz. So now my own error makes my point for me two fold.

After reading that amazing and well thought out post, I have to agree with you.

No, it's not that he has been accused. In the intellectual circles I'm thinking of, a 'defense' is nothing more than someone putting forward their position and arguing it.

Maybe 'critique' would be a better word.

In other words, someone looking at Kirby's work through a feminist lens. Obviously not Boxer.

You're misunderstanding me. I'm not saying it's 'supposed' to be anything. The OP just took Boxer's comments and used them to ask a valid question: Is there a feminist defense/critique/approach to Kirby?

Nothing wrong with opening up a conversation.

Which calls to mind the very first Anti Life Equation plot in Forever People. And in spite of that, I still can't find any overwhelming lack of feminine grace and beauty in Kirby's female characters. If anything, I see a contrast....the craggy crusty "trauma" guys versus beauty and hope.

But whatever, I'm just reading into things here.

A female what? Whew! I'm so glad I clicked on the thread to discover the species of this Kirby taker on-er. Now I know it's a woman (the female type of homo sapien) that we're suppose to dismiss.
It's wanting to know that makes us matter. Otherwise we're going out the way we came in. That's why you can't believe in the afterlife. Believe in the after, by all means, but not the life. To be fair, I think "takes" is supposed to be a noun there. Although that doesn't fix the "female" thing.

That's about the most BS line iv heard. She can't enter his world because of all the drama he went through in WW2. What a croak of ****. Lets be real it was probably a publicity stunt since she is a author you know.

My great grand parents were killed in WW2 i can enter Kibry's world just fine. Granted I wasn't at the concentration camp and nor did i kill people.

Enough of your opinions and sarcasm, chattel! Back to your barefoot pen.

Well, there's all sorts of problems with that title because that's poor word choice. I guess "opinion" or "assessment" had too many letters.

Boxer is approaching Kirby's stuff from an ironic, detached, intellectual perspective. She probably never even read any of Kirby's stuff until she was an adult, she doesn't sound like someone who dug superheroes growing up. You can object to her approach and even to her opinions all you want, but you aren't the first person to bring up this ridiculous "publicity stunt" theory and I don't get it. You think she believes a few mildly controversial opinions expressed in the middle of a larger article about a round table discussion are going to bring her new fans and sell her books? Seriously?
