The correct Kanji should read: 一千九百四十四年十一月.
And you are right, that would be the same in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (if using Hanja). However, I think it's the November 1944 date that gave the Japanese clue, it was a pretty big year for Japan. Either way, it's a minor point to quibble over.

but from the 3 reviews the think that really strikes is its only focusing on the Talon backstory and nothing else

on how it connects all this female characters in tough circumstances, etc

I didn't sense any connection between Batgirl and Mary Talon -- with Gretel, yes, but not with this baddy. I felt there was genuine compassion on Mary's part, like her humanity was still in there somewhere. Maybe she thought Batgirl was deformed under the mask? Or maybe she simply spared Batgirl because she wasn't supposed to kill her. It's not like the Talons are crazed maniacs; they are finely tuned assassins.

The way I learned it was using the full Kanji date, doing some further research, it looks like both methods are valid. Now that I think about it more, it would really be 昭和十九年十一月. At the time, the era dates would be more common, and in fact would really be the correct form, especially with the whole Sonnou Joui attitude left over from the Meiji Restoration.

I totally agree with you about the era dates. Although I think maybe it more likely will be ”昭和十九年霜月＂.

I thought it odd as well. The last reviewed issue was either 4 or 5, and we are now waiting for issue 10.

Well it was just posted 23 hrs ago, and the last posted review was issue 3 apparently. Overall I agree with the review. My one and only gripe about the entire issue was the final fight between Batgirl and Talon Mary could have been longer and knock-down drag-out grittier, otherwise as I've said before a solid stand alone issue.
