Why are you arbitrarily and artificially restricting the realm of discussable canon to "in the moment" 616? I think its because what you said was ridiculous. Because it seems like you're saying that anything that has ever happened in another timeline or not in the present 616 can't be said to have been proven to happen.
VIVA KUSASAN!!! Morrison On Magneto: I made him into a stupid old drug-addicted idiot. CC had done a lot of good work over the years to redeem the character. And I went in and sh*t on all of it.
No, I referring to this...
I think this qualifies as proof that Jean was driven insane.
Simply put 616 is Earth proper... Therefore to the normal humans perception it hasn't happened yet and can only pray that the rumor doesn't come to pass. So, at this point in "present time" how can Bishop justify killing someone born on Earth 616? It's clearly ass-backwards thinking for someone coming to this timeline chasing actual killer type criminal from his era... Ever notice Bishop doesn't give a damn if Shard is ever born?

But what does normal human perception have to do with anything? We are in a vantage point of God, essentially, albeit with limited viewing windows. We know what has happened and what has not happened because it was shown to us. Why would human perception determine what has ever happened? Are we discussing different things?

About your sig: "...The civil rights conceit that the X-franchise has been coasting on has had the most appalling side-effect of making some X-fans feel morally superior for their comics choice." I feel superior for a few reasons, none of which have to do with how civil rights are portrayed. It has more to do with the central themes of the books and the execution of the stories for the last 40 years.

The Civil Rights allegory was killed off by Morrison.
The X-men thrive on Fascism, now. Everything is done under the pretext of self-protection (a popular theme used by Tyrants and despots since the Earth was spinning.) Congruently, X-leadership lost all Moral Altitude. Every X-men or woman of high moral standard has been killed, castrated or cast off.

Storm ( supplanted by Emma frost who has the empathy of a two year old)
The X-men are the Brotherhood of evil mutants its just due to do diligence by creative writers we see things from their POV, without consequence.

No. Bishop was trying to kill Hope when she was a child.
Regardless of how AvX plays out, there can be no forgiveness for that.

Avengers: The Crossing Omnibus is being released in hardcover tomorrow. It's pretty bad and I don't advocate buying (certainly not in hardcover format), but it does lay down a template of how an once-hero who has done atrocious things can make it back onto the side of the angel. Be warned however, that it involves a teen age Tony Stark, Jan VD mutating into an actual wasp, the death of Dr. Druid (oh, spoiler) and one of the best deus ex machina plot resolutions of all time.
It's must reading for any who are considering a heroic Bishop returns chapter in their fan fiction journals.
Please don't call the Wasp "Jan VD".
A Fool for the Foom
What if, by killing her as a child, the Phoenix force would never have set its course for earth scorching planet after planet along the way? Would not his actions have prevented the senseless slaughter of all those billions in addition to the millions he was aiming for based on the prophecy?
Really?? Just who predicted this nightmarish event?
Because, last I checked this was the recording that Bishop's originally was yammering on and on about back in Uncanny X-Men #287
