Jeph's work on the Ultimates undid in six issues what Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch spent three years building. He threw out everything he didn't like. Everything. Thor began speaking in faux Shakespearean, Valkyrie was suddenly a genuine Valkyrie, Quicksilver and Wanda's relationship which was always hinted at possibly being incestuous suddenly became full on squick-nothing left to the imagination-get over here and let me do my sister in the dirt-gross. He also brought back Ultimate Doom, made him really stupid, gave him blood and organs when he's supposed to be composed of living metal, and then had the Thing, whom Doom was demonstrated to be physically stronger than, perform a gut-splatter finishing move on his head. Nothing was left to the imagination with Loebs deconstruction. Ultimate Blob was hinted to be cannibalistic with previous writers, so under Loeb's pen we got to witness him eating a woman's intestines. Oh, Ultimate Jan became Caucasian. Steve went from being old-fashioned to being an ultra-conservative, Hank became a full-on psycho--

Too much. Loeb just takes cribnotes and ignores prior characterization and plot developments. He doesn't play well with others.

You nailed the problem with Loeb's writing pretty well: he's what's porn is to erotic literature. One of the things that was great about Ultimates 1 & 2 was the amount of things that were hinted but never really showed. That gave the reader's mind the chance to fill the gaps with immagination. To INTERACT with the comic book. To use one's mind. Loeb simply destroyed all of that because he doesn't care for such "lofty" things. All he cares about is selling, and doing it with the least possible effort on his part.

The problem with Loeb is not he cannot write: he's showed he can in some of his past work. The problem with him is he considers the reader trash. He considers comic book readers to be 4 years old dim witted children and therefore he writes for that kind of audience. So big explosions big effects, no real plot, senseless ultraviolence and "shocking final twists" with no depth no plot construction and done just for the sheer shock value not because they were an integral (if hidden) part of the story.

The same mistrust for the viewer is what I hear when I read Loeb's opinion about TV shows. Self concluding, one episode stories, because he thinks the audience cannot handle more complex plots, focus on the "big 4" because they are what the Avenger Film Franchise is about and they are therefore more recognizable. Wouldn't it be better to BUILD upon the popularity created by the avenger movie? To introduce new readers to the avengers' rich history? To make them understand the "big 4" may be awesome but the avengers are more than just them? I've got my answers to these questions, and you can easily guess what I think. Unfortunately we also know what's Loeb answers will be.

Bottom line: Loeb writes junk because it sells. He won't anything even remotely artistic (where are is something that helps people grow) because he's perfectly fine with the idea of keeping readers as they are as long as they keep buying the same old trash again and again (but unfortunately for him people willing to do this are less and less every day)

Josh Fine (EMH Producer, until leaving the show when Loeb arrived) says that the reason Yost left is that he was offered an opportunity with Marvel Studios movies that he couldn't refuse.

I'll be very interested when we hear more about whatever this is.

I am very sad to hear that this series is most likely on the way to cancellation. And just when the team finally adds a second female character to it.

I am willing to give a new series a try but if I find it as lackluster as USM I will have no issue dropping it and just re-watching the EMH DVDs over and over again.

Also, we have no idea what the heck he's going to do with the Avengers cartoon. A lot of this is mainly fearful speculation so I'd say just enjoy the current EMH series, tell people about it, and hope it gets more seasons.
