I thought about doing it online but I realized it cost $11 dollars for a bunch of comics that cost nothing, 75% of which I wasn't really interested in. I gave half of them to my mom to give to little kids at her work.

I'm sure when I do my order next week my comic dealer will have some left overs thrown in. All I really wanted was Atomic Robo, Graphic Elvis, Zombie Kid, and Mouse Guard.

To me it's a great marketing strategy that get's alot of attention because it's fun and you can get some quality art and literature for free. It's free so it gets hyped up. In reality most of them aren't worth bagging and boarding but there's an opportunity there for me to receive free art, and an opportunity for artists to get their work out to a much larger group and possibly expand their audience.

Had I been going to my local shop or doing an order that happened to be today it would have been convenient, but given the kind gesture of offering something of actual value totally for free, which probably only happens one other time(free cone day at Ben and Jerrys) a year, I decided it wouldn't be too difficult to get off the couch I sleep on in my parents house and take a trip down to my local comic book shop, despite the fact that my lungs are still recovering from a rare form of pneumonia that left me bed(hospital then couch) ridden for weeks quite recently. It just seemed worth it.

Not to mention a lot of comic shops will even give you more than one free comic! I certainly haven't watched any youtube videos about free comic book day, but if I did, and I saw that they were allowed not just one, but three free comics, I would have been very surprised if they weren't extremely grateful for being given extra free stuff! I offered to reimburse my ex girlfriend for the gas, but she refused because she was happy to hang out, go for a drive, have fun together, and experience something new that she hadn't done before, and she was able to get a couple kids comic books that will probably mean the world to her niece. I could have just paid $11 to midtown and had zero fun, zero exercise, zero sunlight, and 10 extra comics that I didn't want in the first place.

I'll admit though I was tempted to order online but then I saw a guy post on a message board about how he just spent $11 on 27 "crappy reads" and a Donald Duck comic.

P.S. I got every comic I was looking for, and I also got the Donald Duck Comic. It's great.
I got the donald duck coming in my next order. It will probably sit on my coffee table collecting water rings till i trash it weeks later. Glad you had a good day with you're ex girlfriend.

If I could have only picked one, it would have been Atomic Robo.

My son's first pick was Spider-Man.

My daughter's first pick was Smurfs.

My LCS divide the comics by content. So you'll have a Kids, Teen, and Mature all in bags or they'll have them individually spread out on tables. So you have choice. I got all three bags plus some free comics from previous years. I ended up buying Swamp Thing #4,5,6 and Madman #1 reprint.
Currently reading:47 Ronin, Creepy, Frankenstein Alive Alive, The Goon, Haunted Horror, Hellboy, To Hell You Ride

I was mainly after the Donald Duck one. 22 pages of classic Barks for free? Yes, please!

Missed out on the Atomic Robo, Star Wars/Serenity, and Archaia Press books. The last one was a definite long shot, since I went out pretty late in the day, but I'm kinda disappointed over the other two.

Wow, a lot of your comic shops are kind of strict with the free comics. My LCS lets you choose whichever 5 you want, no purchase necessary. My gf and I teamed up and picked 10.

If I was limited to just one, it would have been the Star Wars/Serenity comic. However, my LCS let me take what I wanted. I got Star Wars/Sereity, Buffy/Guild, the DC book, Dinosaurs Vs. Aliens and The Hypernaturals.

My top choice was Zombie Kid, closely followed by Mouse Guard. I went to two stores (both within a short walking distance from our apartment) and between them, picked up 20 titles. I had to ask for Zombie Kid at the first store since there were so few copies available and the 25 Mouse Guards were gone. I went to the other store later to check for other titles the other store didn't have (or I didn't see) and got lucky. I found one Mouse Guard sandwiched between some other comics in a box. Woo hoo! I am surprrised at the number of posts here about stores putting limits on the number of titles you can take and even having to buy something first. Both stores I go to let you take as many as you want without having to buy anything. Isn't that the whole point of Free Comic Book Day? First come, first serve...?

No. It's about bringing in potential new customers and exposing existing customers to titles they may not have tried. Whoever gets the most free stuff doesn't win.

I wasn't trying to make it sound like a contest. Sorry if my post came off that way. Like I said, I was just surprised at the number of limitations. That's new to me.

Shops that let you take an unlimited number of free comics are incredibly generous. It's definitely not the norm. I also think there should be some sort of limits because as stated above, it's about bringing in new readers. Hours after FCBD starts I see free comics listed on eBay with $25 BIN's. Kinda crappy thinking a kid might have missed out on a free comic because the adult who got there before him took them all to re-sell on eBay to another adult.

I grabbed that one for myself, as I've never actually read any Barks (that I can recall).

That's a shame; Atomic Robo was really, really good.

    Sorry.

I can see limiting stuff. For my LCS, they lose money on Free Comic Book Day. The majority of people who come into the store just grab whatever free stuff they can, then never come back in again.

At least they came to the store.they wouldn't have came if there wasn't FCB. My LCS had raffle, posters and comic sets were prizes. You spent $5 dollars for a ticket. Bottom line without FCB stores would not get as much attention as they do now.
You should be able to get one of each per Family

Our shop gave away 10 each. Besides the standard 2012 issues they had a ton of stuff left from previous years and I guess there where some unadvertised ones that were part of the deal, as I didn't recognize some of the choices from the previous ads. I took my daughters and we got a bunch of stuff. I'm kind of broke so I couldn't buy anything, but that store gets a bit of my money usually. I should have branched out more than I did. I got the hardcover Archaia/Mouse Guard book but I should have looked at other stuff. I should have left the Avengers and that Spider-man Season One crap on the shelf. Oh well.
