It was too much of a retread, they cast an actor that resembled Reeve, and directed him to ape his performance, so we got a faded photocopy take on the character...Lex Luthor with another land grabbing plan...stuff like Superman going on a romantic flight with Lois Lane...

some other posters were saying that the idea of Superman having a son, and Lois bringing him up in a relationship with Perry White's son was 'bad writing', well, no, that was actually the most interesting plot point of the movie, that was the good writing, putting Superman in a position where he would be susseptible to jealousy, perhaps abusing his powers in this state of mind(as he did with the x-ray spying), ie creating some very interesting character scenarios.

But where the movie failed was in mis-casting the leads, Routh and Bosworth had no chemistry(as opposed to Reeve and Kidder who had an overabundance of it)... Routh was a pale imitation of Reeve, Bosworth was not a very interesting Lois Lane, and even seemed to be a bit mean in the way she looked down on Clark...a boring super-villan plot...not giving a good, logical reason for Superman's absence for 5 years...not enough compelling, exciting Superman action...

sorry for keeping the thread offtopic, but I was thinking about this last night after reading the comments.

Well Dupe, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaay back in 1976, he was nominated for the first Rocky - in both writing and acting, but didn't win either. So if he's actually got an oscar, it's not his. Just to offer some balance, less than a few decades later, he was also responsible for this -

To be fair though, Sly and Arnie are nowhere's near as bad or in the same league as the ridiculously awful trio of Chuckie Norrass, Jean-Claude-Can't-Act, and Dolt Lundgren. So there's always that to find comfort in. But I still believe they're not on par with Willis or Statham, who've actually shown some range over the years and the capability to portray someone other than themselves.

Who cares anyway?! The Avengers, a superhero movie, is most likely to become the 3rd biggest of all time, right behind Cameron's Avatar and Titanic. That should be cause for universal celebration, not petty disagreements over another movie it bares little resemblence to, if any. 'Nuff said.

It lives up to its hype and expectations, which is an almost impossible task to pull off, but they did it perfectly.
But after I watched it, I'm sure that The Dark Knight Rises will mop the floor in the story department.

But it was already going to be "Stark" tower. So effectively it was already going to be that. The world knows Tony Stark is Iron Man so striking at Stark Tower is striking essentially at Iron Man tower. So what's the diff if they re-purpose it "Avengers Tower"?

As for Banners comment about putting a gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger and the "other guy" spitting out the bullet, that was (IMO) setting up the fact that when it comes to it, the transformation is really fast. The main reason the transformations go slow is because Banner is fighting it in most cases. But when he wants the "other guy" around badly he can transform very quickly. Which makes his whole spoilers:

SHort featurette on the Hulk Thor fight. I just posted it because I thought the foam Hulk suit was hilarious.

Saw Avengers twice last weekend in 3d and regular. Really good. It's a movie were I will take a friend to see if she or he hasn't seen it yet. So far word of mouth has been great. Everyone I've talked to liked it and would see it again. At work we were in a meeting and I just mentioned Avengers and several people light up and expressed their enjoyment of the film. The others were looking at us funny. But they went and saw it and are indoctrinated. :)

Well, let's see. The original Justice League and original Teen Titans stayed in a cave, as did Young Justice when they were using the JLA's old HQ. The X-Men and Avengers stayed in mansions. The Fantastic Four, New Avengers, most forms of the Teen Titans and the Morrison JLA had towers. Both the X-Men and Avengers have had their own islands. The Justice League has stayed in a Hall (not sure what makes something a Hall, but that's what it was), a satellite, a bunker and an embassy. As for more unconventional HQ's, the X-Men once had their own ghost town, Young Justice would move into an abandoned hotel, the Guardians of the Galaxy stayed in a Celestial's head at the edge of time and space, The Justice Society had a brownstone, the Fantastic Four had Pier 4 and the Jurgens era Teen Titans (from what I remember) stayed in an apartment above a video store.

One thing that comes to mind that bugs me. In the current comics and the JL cartoon, the Watchtower is a free-floating satellite. In space there are no up and no down. The concepts only exist in relation to a planetary body. So, how is it still a "tower"? Doesn't a tower have to stick up from the ground? It's more like the "Watchcylinder".

Anyway, any interesting ones I miss?

Thought the movie was pretty darn amazing. It was great to see all those characters interact with each other, and Loki was great. I thought the Helicarrier stuff was a little more enjoyable than the third act because it was more than just an action movie then (and I was pleasantly surprised at how well Tony and Banner got along), but the battle with the aliens was amazing.

I don't know if it's a good or bad thing that I wanted more. I wanted to know why the Avengers Initiative was created in the first place (it couldn't have JUST been because of Tony becoming Iron Man, sure, that's why Fury recruited him, but he must've known something else), and even though the movie proves why they needed to be called Avengers, where did the name come from in the first place? It would've been great to see what everyone thought about working as a team post-battle, but then, I can't really argue with the shwarma scene.

The Legion has that clubhouse. I feel like heroes should meet in Halls more often, makes them feel like lodge brothers or something.

    Avenge
    "

Inflict such harm on behalf of (oneself or someone else previously wronged or harmed): "we must avenge our dead"."
They were called the avengers because they were a group of super peoples who...avenge stuff.
I'm thinking nick fury explained why they were put together in the movie.

It was obvious who was winning when Optimus said that shoving the All Spark within his own Spark would stop the fighting. And then you see Sam do that only to Megatron instead of Optimus.

Watched it the other day, it was pretty good. At it's best I don't really think it's better than some of the best bits from the individual characters movies...but it stays consistently good, which pretty much none of the Marvel movies have done besides Iron Man & maybe Thor. There where little things that could have been cut to keep the movie going better. I don't think we really need to see the camera go around the deck of the Helicarrier in a boring shot while characters that don't matter say things that don't mean anything inbetween it's take off and turning invisible. Not really sure why Maria Hill is a character when she almost did nothing, and everything she did could have been done by Coulson.

Some of the wasn't stuff executed as good as it could have been. The car chase at the start of the movie wasn't good, felt like a bad version of the Quantum of Solace opening. Captain America's whole goal of pulling a lever when the Helicarrier was under attack seem really dumb, he doen't seem to do much besides block some shoots and hang onto a rope. The Thor/Ironman/Captain America fight could have been a lot better, it was like a less interesting version of when the The Ultimates and the European supersoldiers fight Thor in The Ultimates 2.

I really liked the Hulk in this, but it felt like Whedon was reusing too may things that were already in Hulk movies, things like with Hulk on the jet remind me of when Hulk jumped on a jet in Hulk, only it's not shot as interestingly as in the Ang Lee movie. And that whole bit with the Hulk and the Black Widow was just like when Blonsky and his team run into the Hulk in the bottling factory. It also seemed really strange to me that this movie thats all about these characters teaming up and fighting in huge battles seemed to dial some of the characters back. Captain America doesn't seem as powerful as the Cap who was in The First Avenger, that guy was running as fast as cars, jumping like a hundred feet, and other crazy things; Thor also didn't seem anywhere as powerful as the guy who was fighting Frost Giants at the start of Thor.

I left the theater with a headache from all the camera movements.
Still, it was better than Episode I.
