Honestly? I think it due what Superman did in the 70's. Batman in the 80's and x-men in '00.

First Class was more ensemble, but the world doesn't know who Angel, Darwin, etc are... so how will they be that excited about them. I still like X-Men better than Avengers, but as an actual film, The Avengers is better.
I read comics and post on comic boards and I didn't know several of the characters. So they definitely were not going with the most well known. But do you think it makes much of a difference? Watchmen was a hit and I promise that no non comic reader has ever heard of Night Owl or Ozymandias. I think the great part of First Class was that it showed a good story can carry a superhero movie. Honestly, I can't wait for the sequel.

How did First Class show better character work? The focus of the entire movie was on Charles and Magneto with a minor subplot involving mystique. Avengers had seven leads and did an excellent job of explaining who these characters were as people and not special effects. In XFC, Banshee was the flying guy, Frost was the diamond chick, Mystique was the shape shifter and so on. Take away Iron Man, you got Tony Stark. Take away Havok's chest blast and you got...what exactly?

I think the Avengers movie was groundbreaking in that it didn't skimp on showing the power levels of the characters. I think it was a superhero movie that wasn't afraid to be just a superhero movie. I mean, I think movies like The Dark Knight are great, but if you take away the masks, that movie could have worked as just a big city crime/gangster movie. But------if you take away the masks and the superpowers from the Avengers movie, it CAN'T exist in any other genre.

To me, THAT'S what makes this one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. But now, if we stick strictly to how the OP titled the thread "comic book movie", then we'd have to include a whole lot of things like "Road to Perdition", "300", and a host of other movies that Hollywood adapted to film.

    Thats true.
I still remember when movies inspired in comic book characters were few, especially movies inspired in marvel characters.
Now it is cool to see every year at least a new marvel movie being made.
And over all the results have been incredible to fans.
The last movies that lead to the Avengers movie starting in Iron Man,for example have been awesome.

My Top 5 of comic book movies as now is #
    -Avengers.
    -Dark Knight.
    -Spider-Man 2.
    -Iron Man.
    -Batman 2 (From Tim Burton)
    Pull List:Uncanny Avengers,Avengers,Superior Spider-Man,Daredevil,All New X-Men,Hawkeye,Captain America,Thor:God of Thunder,Swamp Thing,Morbius,Thunderbolts,Iron Man,Fatale.
