    Default Defenders #6 *Spoilers*

Don't see one of these up yet, so away we go.

Continues immediately where #5 left off, with Fat Cobra becoming Flatlining Cobra in Danny's apartment. A little chi defib later and we're in the hospital. Danny confirms that the Immortal Weapons are being picked off. Misty Knight presses him for details but Danny is almost literally tongue-tied -- so of course she walks out.

Doctor Strange and Danny agree that the Engines seem to protect their existence by preventing anyone to speak of them, or even think of them, in the presence of outsiders. Danny makes a test swing at the Engine and is instantly intercepted by Prester "Omega"

He calls, very awkwardly, on Silver Surfer to help him check his own library for references to the Engines. Even though Surfer is his archivist, Danny is the one who finds what he's after -- in Orson Randall's tales of adventure with the Confederates of the Curious. They begin to marvel on the coincidence that their little group has found something that hides itself from the rest of the world, when Prince of Orphans appears.

Cue a tense altercation: John Aman is dead convinced of two things -- that Danny's going to shut the Engines down, and that he must be killed. Whatever his reasons for believing this, we never learn them, since Surfer promptly inhales (there really is no other word for it) Prince of Orphans and deposits him in the caldera of an active volcano.

Back in his library, Danny tells Surfer that there is evidence of Concordance Engines all over the world, with a secret history of two groups: one trying to find them and another trying to guard them. He decides he's going to be a member of the first group, which will mean killing John Aman.

I really liked the bits with Orson Randall and his group.

Surfer's handling of Aman was nuts.

I can't say I like what's being done with the Immortal Weapons, but the stuff with the Confederates of the Curious was great. I'm looking forward to finding out more about Aman's earlier team.

Two things -- one, it's not as if it's the ol' "HOW DARE YOU DESTROY ANOTHER CREATOR'S WORK!" bit.

Two, the whole point of the Concordance Engines seems to have something of a built-in resurrection deal. Although not necessarily the way we think? Seriously though, things got way, way, way trippier in this issue, even than before.

Something of note -- at least four of the characters in the book are going through something of a mid-life crisis. Doc, Fist, Surfer, Betty... pretty much everyone but Namor is having something of an identity crisis. And only not Namor because like Namor gives a rat's ass.

Another thing of interest -- in the unlettered preview art Doc had his Cloak of Levitation on when talking to Captain America, and it could be seen draped over the couch when Danny was looking at the Engine. But in the print version, it's gone.

    Editorial call?

"Rand. I spat Aman into the heart of a volcano."

You don't hear that everyday, lol.

The art was a-bit derpy in places but everything else about this issue was great.

I wasn't a fan of this issue. Was Iron Fist always James Bond?

We don't know what the hell they're doing exactly period right now. But they're devices of immense cosmic power with the potential for something something something you know the drill.

it's not what they are doing. it's how dangerous they can be in the hands of the wrong people. entirely my speculation but i think they are literally what makes reality function in the marvel universe. it's a bigger meaner cosmic cube. car = universe concordance = engine

Namor was pining for his childhood and having flashes to his final reckoning an issue ago.

Aman's group would have been so much cooler if the art hadn't been so...unrefined. but i'm loving the Surfer working at a burger joint stuff.

Yeah, but he wasn't giving a rat's ass. Because Namor's too much of a self-involved dick to have self-doubt.

I haven't been reading this series, but from the previews and all, that sounds right. "Concordance" means agreement or harmony. When the engines start to malfunction "the impossible" starts to occur. But then again, I don't understand why they would need to "shut the engines down."

Well, that's one of the things. No one has figured out yet whether the Engines are functioning properly or malfunctioning or what they do. One of them is somehow missing, possibly destroyed. The only reason we know that is because Prester John was wandering around freely, apparently driven insane by the loss.

Matt Fraction has hinted that Concordance Engines are responsible for certain places in the Marvel Universe (like Mt. Wundagore or New York) to be "hot spots" for strange goings-on.
